Zumo tried to take me up a dirt track again this week, but I'm wise to his tricks....  8)

Never happened in years of using Tomtom, though.

Hey Guys

Need a little info here. On the Tech mount for the Zumo 550 are yall using the short or taller mount? Also are you using the Quick change adapter plate from them also. BTW anyone have a extra thumb screw they'd be willing to part with ? Be more than happy to pay extra & all expenses. THANKS IN ADVANCE.             Linny

Linny,

I also used the short mount.  The long one was a bit too long and I thought the short one was probably too short, but I disassembled the mounting plate as it arrived from Techmount and rotated it 180 degrees and re-attached.  Perfect height. I'm not using the quick change adapter, but have seen others that are using it and it works fine as long as you incorporate some in-line electrical connectors into your mounting scheme.

Zumo 550 and then you'll need to know the following.....

Check out this thread - Standard GPS or Garmin - implementation starting at reply #11. You will find a list of all the parts that others and myself have used. I ordered my Techmount from them directly, used the Radio Shack power plug (but will replace it w/the one Terry found if ever needed), and I also got a cover to put on the face of the Zumo to prevent scratches from - Invisible Shield for the Garmin Zumo 550. Also check out this post - Zumo Tips/Tricks... this is a nice replacement security screw for the mount. The one that comes stock has this special screw/screwdriver that is a pain in the butt for us old guys. It is really small and hard to see. Both of the above threads have good information on parts, installation and tips/tricks for the Zumo.

Techmount 30997MC (these are for the stock handlebars (1") if you've changed yours you'll need to get one that corresponds to the diameter of your bars)

SOUND PROFESSIONALS - GOLD PLATED 3.5MM (1/8 INCH) RIGHT ANGLE STEREO PATCH CABLE (1 meter length)

Either one of the following two will be good for power plug if you want to use your cigarette lighter.

12V Flush Mount Receptacles & Plugs (Plug Only)

Sealink 12V Receptacles, Plugs, and Both (Plug Only)

The only other thing I did was went to a local fastener store w/the screws that hold the Zumo mount to the Techmount and got some shorter screws. You can see the difference in these two posts - stock screws and short screws.

Once you get the unit make sure you go to the following places to update and register your Zumo.

Product Registration

Web Updater (This will allow you to make sure your Zumo has the latest firmware)

MapSource software version 6.14.1 as of July 18, 2008 (It has been noted that this version is very graphic intense and has caused problems on some computers. I would suggest not updating any further then Version 6.13.7). Don't try to use the update feature in the Mapsource program because it will not work. You will have to go directly to the previous link download it and then install. Note: You will have to do this w/all Mapsource updates.

If you are going to be interested in loading POI's (Points Of Interest) you'll need this also - POI Loader for Windows software version 2.5.2 as of March 28, 2008.

For those having problems with Mapsource or want to learn more about it try this - Mapsource Tutorial

Feature wise probably so, $$$ wise guess which one you'll pay more for. ;) I also believe the H-D one doesn't come w/a car mount like the 550 does. :nixweiss:

Joe,
Also don't pay attention to the Suggested Retail Price on the Garmin site they have been found several hundred dollars cheaper then that. Just checked on Bizrate for Zumo 550 and PCNation has it for $634.88 w/free shipping, and they are who I got mine from.

Comparing the specs of the two do you get all the things in the box (mounts, etc) w/the H-D version you get w/the Garmin version?

Damn you all!

I just spent about a day driving to as many Best Buys I could in MI, OH, and NY looking for the $449.00 deal... no luck at any of them!

You guys must have got the last ones.

I saw the HD unit, it does not come with the mount and is $800... big shock... mount extra!

I did find lots of Tomtom Rider 2s around for about $650 but most of the bells and whistles are missing that the Zumo has!

You will need a GXM 30 to accomplish that. Again pricing you'll have to shop around for the best.
