Question to the more learned...

I will be installing my HawgWired speakers in the front fairing very soon.  I also have the Zumo 550 and the GXM30 "hockey puck". While I have the fairing off, where can I install it under the fairing?

I have a HW amp that will sit on top of the radio?  :nixweiss: Also, any suggestions on what to do with the wire when not plugged in to the unit?  This antenna will not be used for anything else other than on my bike.
If I were doing it that way and there was enough room I'd probably use some double sided tape and stick it on top of the amp if that would work (no heat related or other issues).

The wire for the XM radio plugs into the motorcycle cradle unless you plan on taking the cradle off you don't have to worry about it. The power supply and the Aux out wires will be plugged into the cradle also.

Absolutely, Terry.  The constant pull between the form vs. function in all that we do to our beloved machines.  That's why the choppers look so good.  Clean w/o all the storage space, instruments, etc.  I've gone over the hill on the GPS deal and could never go back now....it's too neat to have all that info right there on the handlebar, I just wish it was built into the fairing dash like the tach, speedo, and other instruments.  You don't have the big hockey puck on your dash do you?  The one Duane and I are talking about is the one that has the reciever with the XM subscription built in so that it's like JC found out that if you hide it under the fairing, you can't just buy another antenna w/o paying for another subscription for ea. antenna.  Not only is that hockey puck big and ugly, but it's got all that extra length of wire that has to be dealt with.  I think Duane did the very best you can do with the wire, but the way my Zumo is mounted, I can't figure a way to accommodate the antenna in a decent looking manner. (That's probably why D00d hasn't added the XM to his...har!)  You go down and tell Wanda June that I'm gonna make it up to her with a chrome present to make amends next time I see her.  :-* har!  :drink: spyder

Spyder...nope, you can't go back once you have one of these things...it just makes life on the road a lot easier, and in many ways, a lot more enjoyable.  I've "found" a lot of roads I would not have otherwise taken because of the GPS, plus it makes riding in unfamiliar places, particularly cities, much less nerve racking because you don't have to be looking for street signs instead of paying attention to the cages around you.

The XM on the HK radio has a small (1 1/2" x 2" or so), black antenna...I relocated mine to the top of the leather dash on the 06 to get better reception, and it's really not that noticable up there...kind of blends in with the black dash.

In your case, I'm not sure what I'd do...I'd hate the extra wires hanging there too, but I will guarantee you will love the XM while on the road.  The bracket thing most are attaching it to on the techmount isn't THAT bad, and you could route the wires along the bars, the downtube, then wad up the extra in the lower glove box...at least that would keep the "wad" out of sight.  :nixweiss:

Thanks dOOd.  I'll pm Jim and ask him if it is OK for the antenna to sit on top of the amp.  I may find some other place to stash it as well once I open her up.

HD makes a bracket for inside the fairing that holds the XM on the HK radios...it would probably work for this one too.  Attaches on the left fairing bracket bolt.  If you can't find the part number, I'll get it for you...

Actually never had XM or Sirius so one of those cases don't miss what I've never had. Coming from a bike w/no radio then having the ability of AM/FM/WB/CD was a big jump. Having a young adult in the house helped with getting music burned to CD's, and now that I have MP3 capabilities with a couple of 4 GB SD cards I've enough music to last me during a ride.

Actually that's exactly what I thought, D00d, until I went ahead and got the XM......it's so great to have all that variety of music w/o commercials while you're on the road.  I know JC said he listened to the blues channel from coast to coast to coast last year.  Being an ole musician, I'm into a lot of different kinds of music and XM offers such a variety to suit whatever mood you're in w/o having to look for it.  I guess for now I'll have to just fore-go the XM in my other vehicles and mount the radio/antenna underneath the fairing.  That also bothers me on decreasing reception according to Terry and some others experience.  Don't buy the XM for your Zumo and you'll never miss it anywhere.....that's what I shoulda done.  har!  (Oh, another thing I've enjoyed is the XM OnLine for your computer that comes free w/ your subscription.  Good music while reading about these CVO's.  har!   :huepfenlol2: spyder

Hmmm, didn't know about the free XM online for the computer that almost makes it worthwhile. If you could save/burn the songs to MP3's that would even be nicer. :2vrolijk_21: I've got my music on the SD cards broken down into genre's so I can listen to different styles as the mood hits me when riding.

Spydy...you might not have as much trouble as I did with the reception...there seems to be no real rhyme or reason to it, and with the larger Garmin XM puck, perhaps it's stronger?  Only way to know is to try it and see if it's acceptable to you.  As far as not missing what you've never had...never had a GPS before either, but still knew I needed/wanted one.  XM is just so nice, it almost eliminates the need for any other source of music on board the bike.  I still have an MP3 CD in the radio, and the MP3's on the Garmin, but the XM just offers up so many different things, and some tunes you haven't heard in a long time, but you'd never think of buying them.

Yep, D00d, that is what made me do the deal.  It's been great having the XM on the computer and you can burn songs via a deal that XM and Napster have cooked up......supposedly with one click ( I just haven't attempted it yet.....maybe when you sign up you'll walk me through it the way you did on the zumo install).  ::) har!  :huepfenlol2: spyder

Ahhh Chit!!! Why did you have to tell me that I was so hoping you were going to say that I couldn't save/burn any of the songs. Next you're going to tell me it's free/included with the XM subscription. :nervous:

The first XM antenna costs XX dollars,

The second cheaper

The third cheaper yet

The fourth even cheaper yet.

If you get your friends to join your subscription goes down.

We pay for two units - both bikes, My car, his Mom and I think there is even yet another one that floats around from vehicle to vehicle.  It is really not that expensive.

The thing about it if I get it and get used to it/like it, then I'll want to use it in my truck also. For that reason of being able to move it back and forth I would live w/it sitting out in the open. Only thing I might change if possible and not to expensive would be to chrome the cyclegadgets mount if it isn't already. If it was chrome then it might not stick out as bad when sitting behind the Techmount. I have nothing to worry about now as I'm still not sold on it as something I "want" and nowhere near something I "need". :nixweiss:
