Good list of performance mods...
« on: April 29, 2007, 09:17:35 PM »

Has anyone here compiled a concise list of performance mods for the 110"?  I have ordered Vance and Hines Pro-Pipe 2 into 1 pipe, a SERT, and a K&N high flow air filter.  My question is:  what's next?  A different cam?  Different heads (I do not consider this to be very cost effective because they are so expensive).  Different pistons?

What performance mods provide the most bang for the buck?

YES SIR!  It was a beautiful day here.  Got out for awhile yesterday afternoon late.  Maybe 90 minutes or so when I should have actually been working.  Got caught up last night and this morning though.  So took off right after lunch time and enjoyed it all afternoon.  Rolled back in to the shop about 6:00 or so and had enjoyed a great day.

Ok, can we get back to the issue at hand?   :)

I don't know Chip, or where to look to see what performance mods he has done.

This is my opinion, and the simplest approach to your questions:  Put the stuff you got coming on there, get a good tune, and see how you like it.  You'll probably be pleasantly surprised at the increase you get in "seat of the pants" riding pleasure. If that's not good enough for you, or if in a few months you get used to it and want a bit more, I would put a set of either Zippers or Freedom bolt-in, gear driven cams, which require no head work, just pushrods, better lifters if you want them, and maybe checking the clearances on the rocker box covers, depending on which cam you use.  IMO, either of these two cams give the most bang for the fewest dollars spent.  If you do the work, you're talking under 1K.  If someone else does the work, then still around 1500 or so, as the cam swap is not a labor intensive job.

Is there a hell of a lot more you can do...yes!  But how deep are your pockets, and how much power do you need?  If your goal is to chew up almost everything you run into and spit it out, then get ready to spend a chitload of money, pull the motor out, split the cases, add better support bearings, bore the cases, add jugs, get new heads, different cams, different rocker arms, better springs, bigger throttle body....the list could go on and on.

On the other hand, if you want a nice, powerful ride, that can outperform 80 or 90% of most the HD's you'll see on the road, do the cams.  Don't forget to spend some money on better suspension to get the power on the ground in something besides a straight line, and some better brakes or pads to get the damn thing stopped after you've twisted the wick.

That's my 2 cents and is the approach I'm personally taking.

I don't see why a 110 should be any different from any other motor. Start with either a Screamin Eagle breather or the aftermarket one of your choice. Then move on to a good performance exhaust system. Add in a T-Max, PCIII or a SERT and see how you like that. If that's not enough, then go with the Cam change, the only thing is changing cams is expensive, so if you want a lot more than what the breather, exhaust, tuner gets you, then you might want to look at having someone like Dave Mackie match you up with a head porting job, a set of his pistons and the cam he recommends. If you don't want to go that far then TC's cam suggestion is good. I would think at that point you should be somewhere in the 120tq and 110hp range. The Mackie set-up should push you into the 120/120 range and then beyond that it's all about how much money you want to spend, how much reliability you want to give up.

Here's another tidbit of information...  I ride with Phaze, so it HAS to be faster than his "Blue Blaze".   ;D

Steve

As soon as I read this thread I sent you a PM (private message) with my phone # so we could talk.
I can't help you if you don't call me. I have at the present a few fairly quick machines. I have had in the past a bunch of fairly quick machines. I'm not sure why but the older I get the faster I want to go. The info we discuss will be of experience (mucho buckeroos, lots wasted) in what works and what doesn't. It's not information pulled out of a catalog or read in a magazine. It's hands on experience. There are many others on this site that have much more experience that I.  I will share their names with you and knowing them personally I can assure you they will bend over backwards to help guide you in the most productive and cost efficient direction of performance that you are willing to go. It's the others on this site that have also helped me based on their own hands on experience.

Call me if you want.
Would enjoy talking with you.

Here's a picture of  me on my Unlimited street class bike I had in 1991. 16 years ago and running 10.5's @ 132,,, consistently! Unlimited street class champion AHDRA 1992.

Scientists claim the faster you go, the slower you age.    :2vrolijk_21:
