Cartridge or not
« on: December 02, 2004, 08:21:35 AM »

Am getting different answers to the question of weather the bike uses the cartridge in the one fork of our bikes or not.  Has anyone had one apart to know for sure?  Dealer says its like all the electra glides and has a cartridge but the parts book shows it being like a road king with no cartridge.  [smiley=confused5.gif]

I've got the updated addendum to the HD Shop Manual coming.  I'll take a look and see what it says.  Supposedly, it's got all of the CVO nuances in this edition.

Is the addendum for the 04 flhtcse or the std electra glide.  I have the shop manual and the flhtcse manual and the parts book is this an update or one I already have.  If you could post the part # it would be appreciated.

Mr. Magoo.....This is supposed to be an update for the '04 FLHTCSE addendum.  A friend at the HD shop called yesterday to advise he ordered one for me.  I'll get the number from him or off of the manual itself and post it for you.

Guys, don't know if this will help answer the question or not, but here is the exploded view and part numbers out of the 2004 FLHTCSE parts book:

It's not surprising that the shop doesn't know what's in the bike. I've had my front apart...but then I never doubted the service supplement.

No cartridge Magoo! Just like a Road King lowered. I put gold valve emulators in mine w/ SE racing fork oil. It's just stiffer now.

Thanks for the clarifacation PCC thats what I thought.  You must have used the race tech springs since you have the gold emulator valves.  Did you keep the bike lowered or go to a stock height spring?

I talked to the tech at progressive suspension on Friday, and they confirmed that the SEEG does not have the cartridge front fork. If anyone is interested they make a spring set for the front forks of the SEEG. Part number is 11 - 1131. This spring set retains the as delivered height of the SEEG........Mike

Can someone elaborate on what's meant by a "cartridge" front end?  How is it different from what our bikes have as shown in the scans I posted above?  Sorry for my ignorance - just trying to understand.  Thanks for the help!

A cartridge is nothing more than a small shock absorber mounted inside one of the fork tubes. The advantage is that it provided better control over rebound just as regular shocks do.

I think the gold emulators that come with the race tech springs do the same thing that the cartridge does if I'm not mistaken.
