PGR ride
« on: May 06, 2007, 02:43:55 PM »

I attended another PGR ride yesterday, for Marine 1st Lt. Travis L. Manion, 26, (USNA) of Doylestown, PA.

An American Hero, Lt Manion was KIA, Iraq.

From the PGR site

Died April 29, 2007 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Recon Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Marine Expeditionary Force.

That's the official release, Operational facts stated by a General Officer in Iraq have a little more detail, as told to me by Major Cantrel the escort and personal friend of 1st Lt. Manion... "Travis was commanding and leading a patrol of 6, 3 Marines and 3 Iraqi soldiers, in search of a sniper who had taken out approx. 10 people in the previous days. The 1st Lt. was 3rd in line when a shot hit his medic a second shot took down a Lance Corporal. Travis was in a place with cover and could see his men down and exposed but alive. He moved away from cover and laid down a line of fire allowing others to retrieve his men to a place of safety, he maintained his fire until he was hit. Then shaking it off began to fire again for almost 30 minutes he maintained a firefight with the insurgents until he was hit again. His men will survive. Travis apparetnly took 4 rounds.

While at this event we learned from Mark Umbrell, father of 1st Lt. Colby J. Umbrell that his son, also a native of Doylestown, PA was KIA on May 03, 2007.

I have said it before and reiterate here now;

If you have not attended a PGR mission you owe it to yourself and the Men and Woman of the United States Military Forces to make it your MISSION to attend and show your support!

While waiting in the staging area, an elderly woman was driven to the parking lot. My guess she was in her late 80's early 90's. She was helped out of the car and with the aid of a walker met with and shook every PGR members hand and thanked us for doing what we do.

She was a "Gold Star Mom". Her son was KIA in Viet Nam.
