Shifter dropped forward!!
« on: May 07, 2007, 04:42:59 PM »

Got home yesterday and was putting the bike in neutral and the shifter fell forward on the shaft, loose as a goose, I checked it out this morning and it looks like the spline is stripped. I removed the screw and pulled it off and reattached it at a higher angle and it seems ok, but, its on its way to the shop as soon as I can get it there. I know I saw a thread about this a week or so ago, you guys jinxed me!

I think we're all jinxed with this. BigAl has his SEUC over here as we speak for service and an other repairs and I found his was completely stripped. These things are aluminum on a steel shaft. The softer metal looses every time.

The key is to check them often and be sure they are tight. If they get a bit loose and you run them for any length of time they will strip.

I had that happen too. I later disconvered that the metal used in the allen bolt is softer than it should be, and stretches out over time loosening up. So I went to the hardware store and got a case hardened bolt, extra long. I threaded all the way through, and topped it with a nylock nut. No problems since then.

That happened to me on vacation on a rental bike in Maui -- what a hassle.  Thank God it had the heal shifter...

What is a "case hardened bolt" and if I go to a hardware store will they know what I'm asking for?

Look for a "Grade 8" bolt.

The grade 8 bolt wont do him any god if the splines in the shifter are bad though.

What I did one time was drill out the threaded part of the shifter so the long bolt goes all the way through and then put a lock nut and washer on the thing and tighten the heck out of it so it wedges on the splines of the shaft. Worked temp. for me. Don't forget to zip tie it to the rear shifter so you can give it to your dealer when it breaks again.

The grade 8 bolt won't do him any good if the splines in the shifter are bad though.

Yeah I forgot to mention that part.
My whole shifter arm fell off down in San Diego. It's probably still laying on a road somwhere.
So I got a Waltersworkshop extended lever, and that's when I did the grade 8 bolt change out.

With the new lever, and the new bolt, everything is fine now.

I had this happen on one of my bikes awhile back, fortunately I was near home and the shifter lever was were I could see it in the lane on a lightly travelled street.

I used to check them often, I guess I'll add it to my monthly routine again.
