It is interesting for me that the Shifter arms have been trouble free (knock on wood) and the real problem is the inner one.  I now carry a spare bolt for each, one inner and one outer...locktite can and does help.

Even when stripped (splines) a new bolt held well to get me to the dealer in KC last month...Dam, it has already been a month since that trip...but only eight weeks until we leave for Nelson!

You can wrap a layer of teflon tape on the steel shaft and get some more time out of the worn out splines, those billet shifters arent cheap, and mine wasn't on warranty. I know mine fell completely off twice before I figured it out.

Take it off and inspect it, I think you will find the splines striped out. If so I would replace it, and not take the chance of it failing when your away from home.

So what am I replacing here? The shifter or the shaft? I thought it was the shaft?

Once one goes the other is often hosed. (That rhymes). Anyway, check the bolts holding the levers for now. They don't have to loosen much for them to strip out.

Had the shaft break on the way to Jim's a couple of weeks ago.  Shifted by hand using the horizontal rod from the front to rear lever.  Just unbolt the 2 pedals and the inner lever, grease the shaft, slide it in, and bolt up the lever and pedals...

I dont see a bolt on the shaft. I cant find too much on it in the service manual. It looks like it may be held in wiht a retaining ring. Are you sure when you replaced yours it was bolted on?  :nixweiss:

The shifter pedals on the outside and the shifter lever on the inside is what holds the shaft in place.  Grease the shaft, slide it in and connect it to the inner shifter lever(piece that connects to the horizontal rod running back to the transmission).  Then put the rubber spacer and the shifter pedals on the shaft on the outside.  The bolts that I was talking about are the ones that hold the shifter lever and pedals on the shaft.

Gotcha, I got in there this morning and looked a little closer. Your right, it was a simple 15 minute job but my chrome slotted shifter is hosed, the shaft really wasnt too bad, but it did need replacement, it was only 22 bucks, I think I'm going to go for a longer heel shifter anyway, Walters or something. Thanks,

I'll be ordering from Baker Custom Inc some new custom extended shifters, I saw this guy at AZ bike week and he has some nice products. I went for the 1.5 inch over stock 3 slotted billet shifters, which look exactly like stock. I also ordered the chrome spacer to get rid of that ugly black spacer. Check him out. www.bakercustominc.com
