Dyno results, what the hell?? help please
« on: May 12, 2007, 06:55:17 PM »

'06 SE fatboy w/ 2 into 1 thunderheader and powercommander. This is my dads bike, he had the powercommander put on without a dyno and downloaded the 807-235 (Touring model CVO- Screamin Eagle 103", Bassani Road Rage 2:1, Screamin Eagle filter, Stock 103" ECM), just to get the map close until it could be dyno tuned. Well, it was put on the dyno today, started out w/ 90.91 Max torque (dealer did not get the HP), and they tuned it and ended up with 77.13 Max Power and 80.18 Max torque. what the hell?? they told my dad that it was running too lean, so they backed down the torque to prevent burning a hole in the pistons. any suggestions on what kind of power the bike should be making?? And what we should do now, after spending $200 for dyno time and getting the bike de-tuned?? here are the maps, the first one is the before and after together, and the second is the final adjustments. please help

Unfortunately you've quite likely got someone who is terribly ham fisted with the Power Commander.  Not uncommon, even if annoying as hell.

You're not that far from Joplin.  Consider bring it here.  A gentlemen named John Golden who works as Rolling Thunder Dyno is based out of here (though often on the road during the rally season).  If you can get in to see John he is (without hyperbole) one of the nation's best tuning the Power Commander.  Truly an artist.

Their website is here:  http://www.rollingthunderdyno.com/

It really is worth a couple hundred miles effort to get an excellent tuner if you've got the option.

I second Golden. I'm from PA and John tuned my SE in Fla. :2vrolijk_21:

Here is John's work on a 95" SERG with slip on's and an air cleaner.

i'm sure that we did get someone that dont know what they're doing, but it was at a Harley Dealership, that is Power Commander certified.

If your not up to traveling look into the indy shops in your area. We have a local indy who has the rep of being very good with the PC. (he set up shop after I had my bike done) You may have one in your area also. :2vrolijk_21:

The dealership may be "certified."  But the effort you got was certifiable.  Different guy running the dyno? Who knows.  Whatever the reason, however, their best effort on your behalf was hardly worth the effort to roll the bike on the machine.  In fact you paid them for a net loss.  And a considerable one at that.

You might look for other tuners.  You might have that dealer re-address the problem.  Both are options.  Neither is an option that supplies a known to be truly excellent tuner as a known quantity.  Wichita to Joplin is only 200 miles.  You're back and forth in a day if one were so inclined.  Seems an easy choice to me (but it's not my bike).

Having experienced the problem with dyno tuners that you have ( and still are) take 2Lane's advice, if he recommends the guy take a day trip and get done right, its like money in the bank ( or better yet money you get to keep in your pocket and get your biking running right at the same time-a twofer) John

With a Stage 1 breather, a Thunderheader and a PCIII, a 103 CVO should be at the least in the high 90's on both TQ and HP. This sounds like what happened to Beagle a few weeks back. I am skeptical that changing his pipes gained him 27 hp and an equal amount of TQ especially when he had a good set of performance pipes to begin with. Is your shop trying to sell you something ? That was the case with Beags. The shop was a little miffed that he brought in his own parts ( Freedom Cams) to begin with and was whining about not making any money and blah blah blah. Turned me off from using them. Anyway, once he popped for an $850 set of Reinharts, all of a sudden his bike was a freakin monster BULL CHIT. Anyway, you see where I'm headed with this.

As far as what Twolane is telling you, I have seen John Golden work miracles ( no hyperbole ) MIRACLES with bikes that would not run and had to be started by spinning the dyno drum. If I was within 500 miles of John, I would gladly put in a 1,000 mile round trip to have him tune my bike(s)

He's that good.

Take twolanes advice (its always good) I'm positive it will be worth it! Who ever touched your bike was NOT a tuner he was an asshole, you are about 20% down in hp & tq .Thats a 103 not a 88.
I have had a similar problem with a Harley dealer who could not tune a SERT so I had to switch to a PCIII because I new the PC tuner was really good. I ended up with 105hp & 109tq(but I have Zippers 575G cams)the Harley dealer only got me 94hp & 100tq

Cheers

Check Golden's website in the link cited above.  All their contact info is there along with their current events schedule.  Give them a call or an email and try to find a schedule that works.  They are going to be at the Arkansas State Rally in Hot Springs next month.  Even if you're not going to the rally they'll likely be home in Joplin during the week before or after the rally.

I'm for sure not a motorhead and I'll admit I know nothing about tuning. I do not I didn't have any luck getting mine tuned using PC & local people. My dealer did tell me to try Rolling Thunder and John Golden. I never did get a chance to let him do mine, but evidently his name is well known.

The man is truly a master at it.  Makes tuning an art form.  As much as I like the autotuning Thundermax setup on the red bike the fact that Golden is close by here made anything other than a Power Commander a very difficult to choice to make.

I like that I'll not have to buy dyno time again.  And based on the numbers out of the engine I assume it's actually being tuned pretty well.  But all of that is a step removed from knowing it's as good as it could be.  And that's how you feel when Golden is done.

If I'd come across a good tuner who lived close by, I never would have used the Zippers AT. I tried two locally, with bad results. I don't want to take the time ad effort to take my bike 400 miles away to be tuned.

I'd basically satisfied with th zippers. There's one or two areas where it could be tuned in a little better.
