Harley/Kuryakyn covers don't fit?
« on: May 13, 2007, 03:20:19 PM »

I'd have liked to dress up the right hand side of my Engine a little, and now both HD and Kuryakyn have chrome covers to do that:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448770883&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302491575&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302491575&bmUID=1179083657512&bmLocale=en_US

and

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448764489&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302491575&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302491575&bmUID=1179083739400&bmLocale=en_US

But both of these say "Will not fit models equipped with Hydraulic Clutch."

The Kuryakyn one:

http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=harley&ci=3794

says nothing about not fitting hydraulic clutch models, but I thought I'd best ask - they replied to say it does NOT fit models with a hydraulic clutch.   :(

For the life of me I can't see why, though - the layout/shape/size seems to be identical to the cable clutch models...... Anybody any idea why these don't fit our motors?

I installed the bottom one (cast one) on the wife SERK03 and it fit, no issues. I not sure if it will fit the Jesters. I do not know if the hydraulic clutch hose is in the same location. :bananarock:

Jim, I'll look through photos taken at a cruise in a few weeks back for confirmation (hopefully) but think I remember seeing two SEUC's side by side with that second HD cover you listed installed.

On the pre-07s there was a definite issue.  Had to relieve (read: take it to the grinder) a fair bit of metal from the cover to make it match the contour of the 6 speed hydraulic housing on the red bike.  But man it seems like both those 07 SEUC's I saw that evening had the cover installed.

The engine/trans interface cover kit ( three covers ) worked fine on my 07 RG Now I know I've got a 103 built up from a 96, but what's the difference back in that area ?  All 07's come with a 6 speed and the only difference on the hydraulic end cover is a hydraulic line vice a hose going into the end cover. I just worked on a trans swapping the cable clutch to a hydraulic and the end covers were the same externally. All I can think of is you might want to check your bleed screw location. BUT as Twolane points out, I think a little Dremel work and you'd be good to go.

I compared two 07s side by side yesterday, and the hose and cable are indeed in the same locations - but it can't be JUST that, because that second one on the MoCo site doesn't even come down as far as the clutch cable....  :nixweiss: Looking at the pics of that one, it's hard to imagine how it won't fit!  Hmmmmm.

Thanx 2L. Be great if you can find the pix.

Looking at that HD one, it's definitely hard to imagine how it won't fit, but of the two HD ones I'd have preferred the first one.  My motto is "have Dremel, am dangerous" so I'm not afraid to attack it, but I'd like to know I'm in with a chance, before I speculate!  ;)

The one I'd really prefer is the Kuryakyn one - http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=harley&ci=3794 - based on your expertise in "relieving",  ;) you think that one could be modified?

Thanks Spide!  That sounds optimistic.  I'm about ready to order and warm up the Dremel.  :)

Having now got the loan bike from Harley, I've been able to look at the cable and hydraulic covers side by side; the difference is in the cable entry -v- the pipe entry.  The hydraulic pipe enters slightly higher and at a different angle to the horizontal than the cable.  All other dimensions are the same.  So, I think the situation will be:

1) with the little HD cover, it should fit, though may need a little relieving - don't quote me on that though!
2) with the bigger set of HD covers, I can't see any way that could be made to fit if the pipe interferes the way I think it will
3) with the Kuryakyn one, I think you'd have to cut off the entire "hump" at the bottom front, where it is supposed to cover the clutch cable.

I'm tempted to try the Kuryakyn one.....

Good evening Jim,

Do you received an answer about your question to Zipper's ?

No, not that - I've just not had any chance to carry on with it for 10 days or so. I've been away at a rally in the very south of England this past weekend (on the Ultra I have on loan from HD!).  I want to check all the settings, and play around with the map at idle speeds before I'd say I'm completely happy.  :2vrolijk_21:
