Rear Reflector Removal
« on: May 14, 2007, 01:01:20 AM »

Guys, I got a new FXDSE and want to remove the rear reflectors.   The fork reflectors were easier, being on the chrome.  I just ran a zip tie between the fork and the reflector.

The rear ones are of course on the painted fender in a very noticable spot.  If I scratch that paint under them, I'll be either mad or reinstalling them (probably both).   Any ideas on how to safely remove the rear reflectors with damaging the rear fender paint?

Thanks.

Fishing line or dental floss are often good options for cutting things like that off painted surfaces also.

Try a hair dryer and dental floss.  Heat the emblem with the hair dryer and then run the dental floss behind the emblem.  Clean with adhesive remover and you should be good to go.

They come off easily with heat and a bit of adhesive remover from 3M cleans it right up afterward.

Then just add wax :2vrolijk_21:

CDOG,

I used the heat and fishing line and worked like a charm on both chrome and painted surfaces, without any issues.

Although this is a easy job, if you are not comfortable doing it, stop at your friendly local collision repair facility. They are used to removing mouldings/trim etc that is put on with 2/side tape and can do it in about a minute.

Just did mine this weekend.  Tried heat alone, but couldn't get them to pop off.  I used dental floss after that.

Here's the deal for those who haven't done it before (like me) - when you get the reflector off, it leaves a LOT of tape residue behind, as in "crap, this isn't good and what I get myself in for ...".  But I just kept soaking the spot with Goo Gone as I was rubbing gently with a paper towel, and after about a minute, it started coming right off.  It looks done until its dry, then I found a thin film that still needed removing, so hit it again.  AMAZINGLY easy.  Finished the whole job in 10 minutes.

WD-40 is also great for getting the leftover tape crap off.  Just spray some on, let it soak, and it will pretty much wipe right off.  Its also easy on those painted surfaces.  Warm soapy water will get rid any oily film that the WD-40  leaves.
