Fleeting High RPM Idle
« on: May 14, 2007, 09:36:21 PM »

Yesterday as I came to a stop sign at the end of a stretch of bumpy road where I had been rambling along for 3-4 miles at a relatively constant engine speed and load ---about 2100 RPM in 3rd gear---- my bike suddenly developed an idle of about 1600-1800 RPM (NOT a case of an over reading tach either) as I pulled the clutch in for the stop. It kinda surprised me.
 It disappeared with a healthy blip of the throttle. I couldn't help but wonder if this was the start of some bigger problem to come or an isolated incident. It did not reappear for the remainder of the ride. Total of about 450 'easy' miles now.
Anyone else experience a mild case of runaway engine with their SERK or any other FI twin?

I had a similar issue with mine, but none since the new download by the dealer at last service. From what I understand, all bikes produced since November have the updated download.

I verified -- or at least I was told -- at my dealer that my bike had the latest ecm update.
Is there some way I could somehow verify this myself with out any special tools/scanners?

A friend of mine has a SERK and his bike did the same thing about 2 weeks ago except it stayed at 2000 RPM and would not idle down.  Then the engine light came on.

He took the bike to the local dealer and it ended up being something in the throttle body.  They tinkered with it and got everything fixed but even the dealer is not for sure what it was.  They put it on the computer as well.

He has not had any problems since.

leoniru,
Any luck with getting confirmation on your download, still having issues?

I just went on a group ride this weekend and upon leaving the event, I had this same issue (idle would not settle down below 1800).  I tried goosing it a few times at different lengths of time, as well as taking a somewhat agressive acceleration, but nothing seemed to be an instant fix.  After a couple miles of continuous riding at about 3000 rpms, it went away by the time I had to stop at the next light.    :nixweiss:

I also meant to mention that I'm currently running TD's with the SERT and have been for a while, so I don't believe that is the problem.

SokoolJ;

I've not had any reoccurences of the high idle, but I can tell ya that I've just about had it with the UNcool low speed UNtractability of this bike. I don't think it will be much longer before I go the ThunderMax with Autotune route.
