Police: Motorcyclist led 150 mph chase
« on: May 16, 2007, 09:35:24 PM »

May 16, 2007

EUGENE, Ore. --Police said a motorcyclist led them on an interstate highway chase at speeds of up to 150 mph and left them in the dust. But they had the cycle's license number and cited Ryan Lewis, 19, of Eugene after going to his home and finding the motorcycle hidden behind his house.

Oregon State Police Capt. Calvin Curths said he was in an unmarked car in a construction zone on Interstate 5 Monday evening when the motorcycle sped past him. He said he measured the speed at 72 mph in a 50-mph zone, accelerating to as much as 150 mph before police gave up the chase.

Lewis was cited for reckless driving and eluding an officer.

You'd think he would have at least had one of those flip up license plates.

Local paper said the fine was close to $7,000 mainly because everything doubled in a construction zone.

Not that the guy couln't/wouldn't have been doing 150 mph, but that has to be a blind ass guess by the cops.  The guy would have been out of site in no time and there isn't a cop cage in Oregon that will do 150 mph, or stay with a bike that is.  Especially after the cop got out from behind the construction zone cones/wall/equipment or whatever he was parked behind. IMO

I got a ticket one time for 90 in a 25 zone which was just this type of guess.

The cop said he got up to 90 to catch me, I do believe that, but if the dumbass wouldn't have been sleeping when I went by he would have known I was never over 30 in the corners he had to get is big turd Ford through.  Anyway at 19 and riding my 650 Tiger in 1969, I was so worried about fighting it so I just paid it.  Never should have but back then there wasn't the defense lawyer network there is now and fighting it would have cost too much anyway.

I should have, as I recall they reduced it to 10 over so the fine wasn't more than $100.00 which I am here to tell you for a teenager in the 60's was a chunck of change.  Fortunately I had a union job driving truck that paid well.

Thanks Spyd, first new anything I ever bought.  Something like $1100.00 new and $12 payments twice a month I think.

Although my first Triumph experience was much earlier around 1954.

Not sure what the new dodge chargers with the police perfomance  package that the state patrol has been buying will do.  Also hear they had an airplane up in the area.
