After all the work to get the AC cover set up for rolling thunder ride, on return from DC on I95 in Richmond hit a "speed bump" at about 75 mph (raised me off the set about 3 or 4 inches) heard a clanking noise and funny sound on right of engine. Pulled over and found that the three filter bolts had sheered off loosing filter and AC cover.

Have a call into Doherty to see about strength, shaft length, and thread length. The cover weighs 3.5 lbs. and the insert .5 lbs (total 4 lbs). don't know weight of "stock" AC cover so wondering if extra weight might have put undue stress on bolt screws. So take home if you have other than stock AC cover with the power pacc might want to check it .

John,
That sucks. :( I've heard that these studs aren't the best (porous?) and have been known to break. From what I understand it's best to tighten them "gently" and let loctite keep them from backing out.

Gary,
After this I would say you are right, but with doherty the mount bolts are done from the Factory!  Unlike the Arlen Ness and SE versions where you tighten yourself ( have actually learned to use pre set torque wrench). John

Wow. :o Didn't realize Doherty's were like that. Nothing that you could/would have done to contribute to failure then. Sounds like they might owe you a cover too. :nixweiss:

That would be nice but unlikely to reimburse $300 for custom AC cover ( that is what really hurts just got it on and had for only four days!)  I guesss I can dream , but thanks for the thought John

FYI,  when I took my 110 in for the head gasket replacement the dealer said 2 of my 3 bolts connecting the Arlen Ness Big sucker were broken along with the backplate.  I know for damned sure I torqued it to spec when I installed it.  Dealer replaced back plate with HD SE chrome and used grade 8 bolts. I still am using SE football and K&N filter.

I methinks your bike didn't want that cover and threw it off....    :-\

What I can't stand is how wobbly my air cleaner is on my K&N HD-0800 air filter.  Father-in-law has the same air filter but his is rock solid.  Not sure why mine is so wobbly.

dood,
I met Gordon at Laconia and another show in Mass. many times.  He used to have tank panels and shifters with the HD models on them.  I got a shifter rod that said Deuce.   The next time I met him, he said that Legal reps from the MOCO gave him a written notice to stop using HD copyrights without permission.  It happened at MBBW a few years back.  I was fortunate to get the last Deuce dash panel.  From his web site you can see that there are no more, unless you ask, I presume.  His stuff is quality.

As far as the inserts show above, they look like timimg covers with the five holes.

SKR,
the timer covers actually fit on horn insert, the five hole (similar to center mount) are actually air cleaner covers. Just got the AC cover insert from sanjoy engraving, waiting for the AC cover ( remodeled), and the back plate from Doherty.  Lots of interesting conversations, will post all when get pix of total package. john

AC Cover to share with everyone. This one's get more air from the front but also sends air to the rear cylinder too. It can close from the frount if it rains but still has air intake on the inside. I do notice a cooler temp now with this new cover on and my lower's off as well for now.

Big Dave,
just out of curiosity, how much does the AC cover weigh? As you can see from my above post the custom one I had done weighed 3.5 lbs., and doherty thought the weight help contribute to sheering the support shoulder bolts. I wonder if any engineers have looked at sheering forces on these bolts as to acceptable with support, as I sure can't find any answer yet.  John
PS what backplate do you use? (stock, SE, big sucker, etc.)
