bushtec trailer wiring on an 07 SEUC
« on: May 18, 2007, 03:29:09 PM »

I am taking delivery of my new Bushtec Quantum trailer next Tuesday.  I will self install the hitch and wiring harness.  Is there anything about the wiring of the isolator or harness that I should know about before I start, or is it a pretty straight forward installation?  For those of you who have self installed or for those who had this factory installed on your 07SEUC's, any hints or pictures would be welcome.

thanks...Scott

Scott,
On the 2 I've done (the 3rd is sitting in the garage waiting to be done), I've always made an intermediate pigtail to draw the lights off of.  The rear light harness is the 8 (maybe 10, I don't remember right now) connector black plug directly in front of the backrest bracket.  My 07 only has 5 (I think) wires in it.  I buy a new connector, making short leads for each pin with a tail on each.  This "harness" gets plugged into the factory harness, so I haven't touched the factory one, only added at a junction.  Makes it real easy to revert to stock if the need arises.  On the previous 2, I've run the trailer wiring inside the rear fender and terminated it at the hitch.  This one I may run the harness across the rear fender and down inside the fender strut to terminate at the lower end of the strut.  This would eliminate the b*tch of a job required to run inside the fender and allow easier access if something ever needed to be repaired.  Hope this helps.

Scott:
I did mine on my 06 CUSE but I also bought an addtonal part (From J&P Cycles) its a wire Harness plug that you do all your splices to your isolator and the plug it between the rear (oem) Harness - there by not splicing your wiring harness and it makes for easy removal if you wish to return to stock. Sorry Here is the link to the part number.

This will allow you to make all your wiring connections at your bench and then solder and sink wrap being nowhere near the bike then just plug it in hook up your trailer and your good to go.

Go to the J&P Web site and search for trailer harness and you will see what I'm talking about. The Hitch is a real easy install enjoy.

I got my wire harness from Bushtec with the isolator, and the connector
from J & P. I plugged them in and ran the pos/neg to the battery.
Nothing spliced, nor schrink wrap, nothing else! It's been working
great since I got the trailer in 07.

Scott:  This is from the Bushtec website - price $89.  Looks like the isolator (adapter you are ordering from J&P) is included.  When I put mine on my '07 Bushtec did not offer this and I too ordered the adapter from J&P - works great.  No cutting, no splicing into bikes wiring.

Plug-N-Play Electric Relay Isolator Package for 1996 and later Harley Davidson's (will NOT fit 2009 CVO Road Glide and 2010 Street Glide). The relay isolator package easily and properly connects and isolates your trailers electrical load from the motorcycles factory wiring, fuses, relays and computers and electronics. The main power and ground comes from the battery. For ease of installation, we have built a version of the isolator that plugs directly into the H-D factory wiring system.  For the do-it-yourself installer that wants the cleanest and easiest installation.  Includes Plug & Play Adapter.
