Rings Not Seated
« on: December 18, 2004, 10:11:08 PM »

I have about 800 miles on the 103 now and just pulled the plugs. The bike has been missing at cold idle on start up for a couple of days now . It was just skiping a beat or two every now and then. I pulled the plugs and the front one looks great. Just a slight amout of color on the center ceramic with no carbon build up. The rear one is a different story. It has a black glaze on the plug every where. Looks almost fouled. Has anyone seen this and if so did the rings seat better with a few more miles on the bike?
Thanks. Dave

They may take quite a while to seat now that you have that many miles on it,  you may talk to the dealer there may be something wrong other than the rings not seated,  Broken ring, gouged cylinder. Also check the thread on breaking in a new motor I think it is in the general cvo. Good luck and keep us posted as to what you find out.

Thanks for the reply McGoo and and thanks for taking the lead on being a moderator.
I was easy on the motor the first 500 miles , mabe a little to easy. Im going to change the plugs today hoping the problem is a past issue. I think its time to start running the engine like I stole it and see what the plugs look like in the next 200 miles. I`ll keep the group posted.

I wouldn't assume that the rings are causing the problem at all.  Most likely there is a problem in the ignition or possibly the fuel deliery.  As the saying goes, start with the easy stuff first.  Hopefully, all you have is a bad plug or something simple.

Its not the rings, probably no problem other than you checked the plugs at the wrong time. If your really into plug readings, take a wrench with you. Ride it "briskly" (WFO), let it go to idle and click it off, quickly, before it has to time to change the plug reading. Stop, and check the plugs.
Try it, you'll like it. Then get back on, forget about it and ride it, it is under warranty.
