Hoist's Diary of a Mad Pick-up Ride!
« on: May 21, 2007, 04:28:19 AM »

First, it was a hell of a trip! We did over 3000 miles in 9 days and stayed a different place each night except Atlanta and Clinton. And all but 2 of those nights were spent with my brothers and sisters from this great site! I want to thank each and every one of you for your tremendous kindness and hospitality! I’ll now bore you all with my detailed trip report and mention the names as I go thru the story. I’ll try to make it as entertaining as Travis’, but I ride better than I write!

Day one: We left NYC about noon to great weather. Across the GW Bridge thru NJ and into PA. Helmets off, back into the sun and wind! Zipped thru PA down I-81 to MD, lids back on. Thru a small strip of WV and pulled into Front Royal, Va. About 4:15 PM ahead of schedule to meet the group. Met up with TCnVA Tony and Phyllis, and VAZHOG Wayne and Lynette. We had a nice Pizza dinner as they wanted to impress this NYer with their best Pizza. Not bad for VA Wayne, but I gotta get you here for some Amore’ Pizza! We said later to Tony and Phyllis and the 4 of us rode off to Wayne and Lynette’s house. What a gorgeous place the have! They sure know how to live and were extremely gracious! We hung out and BS’d a little then the first day ended.

Day two: Red Devil Charlie showed up and we headed out to Skyline Drive to meet Kojak2 Casey at the entrance. Nobody there by 9 so we headed down the SLD. Got to Big Meadows to meet up with Fired00d Gary and low and behold Casey was waiting there too! We had our hellos and checked out each other’s rides. Then off we went. Casey had just shown me his Dyno run and it was pretty impressive. I’m down 10HP and 20ft-lbs from his numbers. The group asked me to lead, but it didn’t take long for Casey to blast past me on a straightaway! Well that’s all it took to light me up! We blasted thru the park and he slowed for a curve. I lined the curve up and blasted by him, braking into the turn and never looked back. We got to our next stop and joked about me and him flying through the SLD. Casey’s from the area and told me no on ever passed him in the turns on that road. 2-up with luggage no less! Numbers aren’t everything! Great ride Casey! Gary, Charlie and Wayne thought we were nuts! It was fun and I’d like to do it again now with the Traxxion. Then Gary, Wayne and us took off again.

We continued to the end of the SLD where we met up with Mr and MrsWeCVO Jamie and Candy. We stopped for lunch with everyone. Wayne and Gary took of and I then had the pleasure of riding with Jamie and Candy down the Blue Ridge Parkway. Those folks can sure ride. And Candy does a great job of handling that big bike. After a ways, Jamie and Candy had to peel off, so Barrie and I continued down the BRP. We got to Roanoke and headed off for gas. Barrie was a little bored since we’d done this a few times before, and I was having all the fun in the twisties! So I headed to I-81 and was at the NC/VA border in no time. I saw a sign that said Charlotte 135 miles. So I called S/B Chip and asked if he wanted company. I told him I’d be there in an hour, joking of course! I asked him if there was a hotel in the area and we’d get together that evening. He would have none of that and demanded we stay with him and Nancy. He said to meet him at Exit 15. We blasted down I-77 toward Charlotte, doing between 90 and 115 most of the way. We got there and nobody was there. I called him and he was shocked I was there already. He hadn’t left the house yet! Surprise! We met up with them, had dinner and went back to their place. Another beautiful home and very generous people! He showed me his bikes loaded on the trailer ready for MBBW. That Frontier is a beauty. They had to work the next morning but got to see him again before heading out to Atlanta in the morning.

Day three: We left Chip and Nancy’s and headed out to Atlanta. It was an uneventful ride and made pretty good time. We got to stop for my first Waffle House of this trip! Yeah baby! Eggs and cheese with bacon and grits! Now we’re talking! We pulled into Atlanta (Marietta) in the late afternoon and Chief Chuck met us and we followed him home. We got to know each other better and after his wife Mahota (Pinkie) came home, we went to dinner. Damn, another beautiful house! Fine folks and gracious hosts. They had to put up with us for 2 days. If they had done any more for us, I would have moved in!

Day four: My idea of a day off is spending it at the shop with my bike. Not Barrie’s though! I knew this though and had a plan. We got to Traxxion for a 9 AM appointment to get my new front suspension. I immediately went to work on the lovely woman there, Karen, to find me a spa for Barrie to get a massage and facial and whatever else would consume her day. Karen was great. She found her a place and even took her there and picked her up! That kept me out f the dog house, her not having to hang around a bike shop all day! Thanks Karen! They worked on my bike and it took longer than expected. I of course, kept poking my nose in the back and offered assistance. They’re not all that familiar with the HD and RK quirks, but persistence paid off. My bike was transformed into a handling machine by the end of business that day! It felt like no other FL I’d ever had, but that’s another thread. We went back to the Chief’s and headed out for some Chicken and Dumplings and Fried Chicken Livers at the Southern Skillet! Mmmmm! I didn’t know I was ordering a bowl of soup though! We met up with Derrick there and he had his SERK. For the first time the SERK’s outnumbered the SEUC’s 2 to 1! Then after dinner, back to the Chief’s. He went a different direction each time. I never quite got my bearings there and had to call him regularly to ask him where the hell I was! Even when I was around the block! Oh well. I’ll get it someday Chuck! Packed up and got ready for KY!

Day five: Said our “see ya’ laters” to the Chief’s and headed up to Nashville to meet the KY boys there. It poured just about the whole way. First I had to deal with the Interstate being shut down due to an Airlift Rescue. Friggin’ wonderful! Traffic was backed up for miles. F that, I rode the shoulder the whole way. I lucked out and got to the accident just as they reopened the highway. I blasted up front and got out of the pack instantly. Not too bad for me, but them cages were another story! Rode the rain al the way to Nashville and was only 15 minutes late to meet HogBreath Ken, displacing air Barry and deepsoutheagle Ed. Yeah baby, more Waffle House! We ate lunch, saddled up and headed to Clinton KY, via the Trace (Land Between the lakes). I pushed these boys pretty hard even though I had no idea where we were going! It was a great ride back to Ken’s where I finally got to meet his better looking half (much better looking I might add!) JesterDecor Cheri and Ed’s wife Trish! Man oh man, what great folks these KY people are. And do I have to say it again? Another fantastic home and what a spread!

Well I have to tell you. Ken and I hit it off like long lost brothers! So did our wives. Unbelievable! A country bumpkin and a NY wiseass became friends and brothers for life! I think B B first hinted that Ken made KY sound like a great place to live. Well I couldn’t agree more! Ken grilled us up some steaks and Cheri made some great fixin’s. A great dinner topped off by Cheri’s pudding cake! Mmmmmm! We shot some pool and BS’d to a Hillbilly Country Western music sung by an Australian band doing Snoop Dog to C&W! Holy Chit! And I thought I heard it all! Off to bed for a well needed rest and recharge my Battery!

Day six: Got up to a nice country breakfast and to find Big Ed had already made his Hickory coals and had the ribs in the Smoker! Man did that chit smell good! And Ed is one fantastic guy! We got ready and took the sleds for a ride to the River Park in Clinton. Cool park and commemorative of a famous Civil War Battle at a stronghold location along the Mississippi. By the time we got back, we were able to start cheating on them Ribs! Only 1 rack was MIA before the party started. Well maybe 2!

Then folks started to arrive. TCnBham Terrry, Ghost Rider Travis and the one and only 2Lane Don were first on the scene. Then Barry and a couple of HB’s local riding Buddies and then Mav 7266 Jerry and his wife arrived later that night. The day was spent as you heard, getting to know each other better and riding each other’s bikes. Then torturing the local cop by blasting up and down Ken’s road! He did spoil the Drunken’ Drags I had planned though! Oh well Ken, we’ll have to do that at next year’s Second Annual BBQ! They prepared an unbelievable KY style BBQ with all the fixin’s and the party went well into the night! A great time was had by all. Happy 50th Birthday Ken! And thanks to all for your nice Anniversary wishes! We finally crashed ad got ready for the next day’s departure ride to Lexington.

You got so many details in Travis’s thread, I’ll spare you my detailed report of these days here in KY. He was completely on the money and tells a better story than me! So I’ll just continue with my diary report.

Day seven: Rounded up the troops and went to Paducah to meet Barry at his home. You guessed it, yet another beauty! We met his wife, hit the head and then hit the road! We toured Paducah and set off to the KY Dam and met up with Jerry. So it was me, Ken, Don, Travis, Terry, Barry and Jerry hitting the road across KY! What a scene. We were stretched out pretty good while moving along. And like Travis said, I had to screech into one last BBQ joint while there! Then off to Lexington where you already know what happened to Barry. Kinda revised our plans for the rest of the day. But like the CVO Brothers that we are, didn’t even have to think about taking care of business for Barry. Travis was behind him and saw everything. Ken and Don were already around the ramp and were already on the road. I stopped at the top of the ramp and waited to make sure they got off. All of a sudden I see Travis waving his arms to me. I immediately pulled a “U”ie and headed back down the ramp against traffic. F that, my brother’s down! I called Ken and Don. They stopped when they didn’t see us behind them. I told them what happened and they returned immediately. Luckily Barry was only banged up. He did real well from what I saw and heard. Could’a been worse and we were happy to see him on his feet. We got his bike mobilized again and Don rode it out of the ditch and to a McD’s for pick-up flatbed to Lexington, where we then rode off to meet Barry and his Melon. Dropped the bike at HD there, checked into a Hotel and met for dinner. By the end of the day, at least we were able to joke bout it! Barry’s not hurt and the bike’ll get fixed! That’s all you can hope for in this situation!

Day eight: We slept in a little, checked out and went to HD to check things out and yeah, went to Waffle House for Breakfast! Don left early, so it was just the H/B’s Travis and the Hoist’s left. Barry waited for his brother to pick up him and his bike and we saw him off. Then after my last Waffle House meal, we all hugged and said our See Ya’ Laters! Travis and the H/B’s headed west while the Hoist’s headed east! Well it was almost over. Heading back to NYC always sucks. That means your trip’s almost done. But on I pushed. We left Lexington real late, so I didn’t have time to circle down the bottom of WV and thru the back mountain roads, like I planned. We took the Interstate thru the WV Mountains and it was still beautiful. KY and WV are 2 beautiful states! We rode to Hancock, MD, took a Super 8, and headed out to a nice dinner. We talked all night about what a great trip we had. My wife is totally amazed that we can spend a week with people we only met on a web site, and all act like we’ve always been best friends! I think she’s starting to get it now! You might even get to see her here now if JD has her way! These two have become BSR BFFs for life too!

Day nine: Last leg, short day so we slept in. Weather ominous too! Barely any rain so far. Didn’t do too bad. Rained in NJ and the Bronx. That’s it though. Lucky. Didn’t even put on rain gear. Stopped under a few overpasses though! But I wasn’t going home without seeing 1 more CVO Brother. I planned a gas stop just before NJ in Stroudsburg, PA, just before the Delaware Water Gap and met Puzzled Mike at the gas station. We spent an hour BS’ing and watched a few rainings pass. When the coast was clear, I hit the road. The clear coast didn’t last long. Rain and overpasses on and off in NJ! Finally hit Queens around 6 PM but had to go to our favorite Pizzeria, Amore’, for some great NYC slices and some Chicken Parm! A great end to an unbelievable trip! I could not have asked or planned a better one!

So, I did this in Word, ad I’ll Copy/Paste it in as many posts to fit it all. Might I close with a few last comments. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of youse guys kindness and hospitality! It was a real pleasure meeting each and every one of you! And special thanks for those that shared their homes with us. I can not wait to see you all again! And you all know that you have open invites, anytime you’d like to visit NYC! This damn thing took me 2-1/2 hours to compose. I sincerely hope I didn’t miss anyone. I don’t think so, but my apologies if I did. It’s 4:15 AM and I’m a little burnt out. But I couldn’t go to bed tonight without putting something up on this. I’ll get you my pics of the journey tomorrow!

It’s all of you great folks that make this site what it is! And THIS SITE RULES!!!!! Thanks Neal for making this possible and I’ll get to see more of you in 2 weeks at my house this time for Nige’s visit from England! Hope to see a bunch of you there. I’ll get some hotel info tomorrow for that. We get to do it again!!!

See ya’ll later everyone!!!

Well Speedy!

Glad you made it back.
We enjoyed meeting you and Barrie.
I'm thinking everyone you met needs to show up at your place for a Hoist reunion!
Can you imagine H/B and J/D in New York city?

Hoist, Don, & Travis all say it better than I ever could. What an adventure! I had a frigging blast! I could live this way everyday! I had to take more time off work than I needed to, but, I'd definately do it again. I wouldn't have missed it for nothing!

I think the tooth count is higher here than Hoist imagined. My favorite saying all week was..."It must suck to not be us!" Good friends, good food, great bikes, great weather. It just doesn't get any better.

I think that crazy New Yorker is ready to call KY home. Clinton may be a little too country for him. Paducah or the KY Lake areas wouldn't probably win out. Paducah is not a big city, but it draws from a huge area. Hope you can talk Barrie into making the move. Don't do it until I have a chance to visit the big apple though.  Those people need to meet me.

Howie, great recount of the trip.

It is great to meet everyone along the way and get to know so many folks from the site.

Glad it all was problem free, other than DisAir's mishap.

Good to have you back and I imagine in fine form here soon. :2vrolijk_21:

One of these years I ride in NYC......

Howie - Read your ride report and the others who reported.  Great riding and great new (and old) friends. Too bad about the mishap.

That's what riding is all about - riders/roads/fellowship.  Glad you & your wife had a great time!

Howie,

I was going to read your report, but it was way too long.   :huepfenlol2: HA!  Only kidding.

Thanks for the great report, and all of the great memories.  But, especially thanks for letting me test ride you bike.  What a difference that suspension work made.  This site has found yet another way to seperate me from my money.

Later,

Thanks for the great report Howie!!  It was a pleasure meeting you and Barrie and can't wait to get together in Hot Springs and visit some more.

I might be convinced to come up to NYC next spring when the Allman Brothers play at the Beacon for their annual 2 week gig...something to think about anyway....
