Sure thing Nige, but you better bring another empty duffle bag. After you ride it, you'll have to fill it w/all the chit you missed since your last visit! ::) Hoist! 8)

Lol Howie - I think I'm doing OK over here with the aftermarket chit. Bike will now have V & H slip on ovals, V & H True Duals, Doherty Powerpacc/powervents and Mystfree system. Powercommander III USB, currently running m812-025 map, but going for it's Dyno run in a couple of weeks).

The bike is just up to 500 miles and I'm starting to wind her up a liitle now. Still haven't been above 4,000rpm in any gear, but there is a lot of little horses in there that I can feel kicking at the gates !!

I have learned that a man can only have as much horsepower as his bank balance will allow !  :(

But I'm working on it.

I'm testing Goodridge's first clutch line for the '07! It's different at the tranny cover than the previous hydraulic clutches on these 6-speeds. I should receive it by next week, and should also have my bike back by then. I'm installing the 12.5's and new calipers. I'll let ya'll know how it goes and get some pics! ;) Hoist! ;)

Hoist & Others:

Well just got back from a 5 day trip to Sturgis....I fortunately was able to put the WO515's on prior to leaving....those being the 10.0" baby apes from Wild One.

Since My RKC is not a "serk" there is no need to post photos....but I look to you "big" boys for guideance.  Anyway....the trip involved riding up there and back...mostly highway straight riding as well as 25-45 mph mountain riding through switch backs and such at slow speeds through the Needle's Highway....I have been left with the impression that these are the PERFECT bars.  I ALSO love the "look" of the bars on the bike and most importantly the "comfort" and "performance" of bars on the bike for me personally.

I was a bit surprised to read Hoist that you decided to jump to the 12.5" Wild One Apes with most likely an 1 3/4" more rise and nearly the same of them coming back to you (geometrically just because one increases height 2.5" doesn't mean one sees it completely because of the angles).....As for me at 5' 10" with orthodics, socks and boots the 10.0" are perfect, I wouldn't want them any closer or higher for myself.  (I am 5' 8" tall without socks, orthodics, boots etc...lol) I also am a 42" regular sport coat thus the width of the 10.0" was/is also very comfortable....I have a buddy that is 6' 1" tall with also a 42" regular sport coat application, with a 33" inseam (mine being 32" inseam) and he is running the 8.5" WO mini apes....after sitting on his bike after my install and feeling his bars and where mine were....I was quite excited that I chose the 10.0" ones.

I ended up with the stock clutch cable no change necessary, 4 inch over throttle and and idle with cruise cables, the brake line needed to be adjusted which meant bleeding them became needed.....Of course on a basic bike like mine keeping with the black vinyl look was perfect for me except for the stainless steel look already installed with the front brake line.

While not as many miles on this trip were being rolled up, time on the bike was still impressive. having spent 3 of the 5 days in the seat on the bike for 10 hours each.....I must also admit that anyone attempting to find utopia with their handlebars MUST first make a commitment to their seat as your seat placement along with your foot placement are the first important beginnings to finding which handlebars will work for you.  Complicating this matter for 2008 owners of Road Kings or SERK owners in general will be the reality that the MOCO has modified the frame to accomadate the ABS and the new brembo brakes thus the swing arm will change as well....so what I am speaking to is only releveant for those of 1997 through 2007 framed bikes for a direct comparison....As we all know the geometry of the hands in relationship to over all comfort is at best a completely distractable reallity.

Hoist, having read your posts over the past few months with your 07 SERK I will be most interested to learn how you ultimately feel once you have some riding time with the 12.5".  We all know that what feels comfortable sitting on a bike for 10 minutes is completely different from how our bodies feel with miles rolled up over back to back to back riding days.....So I was quite curious to see your jump to the 12.5" from the 10.0" bars but I also know from reading your posts that jumping back if such comfort is realized is no big deal to you.  LOL

continued.....

All should note that parking lot riding and manuevering is a bit more cumbersome....but one gets use to it fairly quickly.

I also found that with the height of these bars that other right hand positions are now available such as resting one's right hand over the master cylinder is a nice change of pace if one has cruise such as my bike has as well.

Anyway I do thank you Hoist for your input to me and others in answering the questions I had when attempting to decide what to do earlier this summer your insight was invaluable, so thank you.

As for me, I would highly recommend to others that the 10.0" WO515's Wild One Baby Apes are a perfect application for me personally....and for anyone interested the novelle corporation that makes the wiring extensions is a perfect solution to keep from having to splice your wires. I purchased the 8" wire extension kit which for my application was plenty.  However I would to anyone that they read carefully through their electronic diagnostics to determine how many wires are in their handlebars to their switches and so forth....for example my 2002 RKC has a total of 8 wires to one side and 9 to the other or a grand total of 17 wires which means I had need for 17 wire extensions and my kit while designated for a cruise controlled bike only had 15 wires.  I thus spliced two wires anyway....The kit sells for approximately $47.00 and I thought it to be a valuable product.

Given that I purchased the above wire extension kit, and only needed to replace my throttle and idle cable with cruise with black vinyl without putting stainless steel cables on, with the inclusion of the cost of the handlebars, and that I already had the stainless steel brake line installed but that it needed to be adjusted / rerouted which meant bleeding the brake fluid and purchasing new fluid, and having my throttle and idle cable adjusted after completion of the install by a professional...my total install cost was right at $370.00.  I did the install myself (minus the final throttle/idle adjustment) in about 7 hours start to finish.  The bleeding of the brakes did add some additional time to the install but that partly comes under maintenance anyway so I have not included such here.

I appologize for the length of this post....it's just that handlebars are a nitemare!!!! so if anyone reads this in the future hopefully the "details" will help in assisting them with their decisions....I know that having read your posts on the topic at the time were helpful to me.

OH and you are getting close to the close of summer 2007 and your bike is nearly done.....WHAT AN ADVENTURE!!!! nearly 9 months of work on your bike Hoist.....I have 18 pages of notes on your alterations and experiences...if I ever purchase a SERK....I will just duplicate your results....lol....

Regards,

That's funny! ;D Thanks for the kind words FXR2! I am a little quirky that way! I lived with the 10's and liked them. I thought they were just right. The I sat on a RK w/the 12.5's and they felt even better. But never rode with them. The only way to see if something is perfect is to try it and test it. I found that out on my engine upgrade project. We tested many component combos to get just the right combination. So why not be sure with the bars too. It's nice to get it right item the first time, and save the expense of trying something else. But you can't really be sure until you try! I'll let you know!

I'm glad everything worked out for you and you're happy with the bars! Enjoy your bike man! ;)

I put the 10" apes on my SERK (07) rode to Beartooth Mountain from ND and wound up having severe arm pain (kinda like I had with the stock bars) - not enough pull back for my taste (I'm 5'8 with boots). So I ordered a set of 12.5's and 14's - tried them both and I am going to go with the 14's. With the pull back that I need they really aren't too high for me. I also went with a HD RK Classic back rest and "washered" the back rest holder so I sit back further and not quite so straight up. Not sure how they are going to be in slow speed turns and such but I guess I'll find out. Hope this works cuz changing bars is getting pretty spendy - especially since I'm doing the hard bag thing as well!
Anyone have 14's on their SERK?
