2003 FLHRSEI2 - care of the solid aluminum wheels
« on: December 22, 2004, 09:13:13 PM »

Just had my SERK2 in for it's 10K service, then winter storage at the H-D dealership.

The mechanic noted that he thought my back wheel was "beginning to show some corrision". As much of a detailing nut as I am, I was surpirsed and concerned. He said it's fairly common on these bikes, since the rear wheel is harder to access as easily as the front without romoving sadllebags, putting it up on a lift, etc. He said they'd have one of their detail guys "put a coat of wax on the wheel" so it wouldn't pit or corrode further over the next 4 months in their storage.

Bottom line:
What does everyone else do to preserve and protect the polish and shine of the solid aluminum disc wheels on their SERK2's?

Thanks for any responses and suggestions!  [smiley=laugh.gif]

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL MY FELLOW FLHRSEI.ORG MEMBERS AND CVO OWNERS!  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

I wipe down the wheels at least once every other week with a soft clean terry cloth moistened with Meguiar's Quik Detailer to keep the wheels as free as possible of the brake dust. When the bike is washed, I follow up with an application of Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax for gloss and lasting protection against the elements. The wheels don't have any signs of corrosion.

I wash the bike about once a week and hit the wheels with S100 cleaner. When ever I have the weels off for maintenance (about twice a year) I polish the wheels and put a coat of wax on. No signs of corosion yet.

Mother's has a "billet" polish that is awesome.  Polishes and waxes.  No probs for me yet...

I had some hard water spots on mine that were looking pretty bad.  When I had the front wheel off for bearings I tried some 0000 steel wool just to see if it would scratch it or not.  I couldn't believe it-it worked really well and didn't scratch at all.  I had tried every polish someone mentioned and none of them took it off as easily as the steel wool did.  Then I put a coat of wax on them.  I think I'll do it every winter now.
