Oil cap blow off?
« on: May 23, 2007, 06:56:54 PM »

I was going to change my transmission fluid (red line) so I went for a ride to warm it up before draining it. I had gone about 7 miles when I came to a stop before a long straight. I got on the throttle kind of hard but didn't redline and when I hit 3rd gear I saw nothing but smoke and oil. I thought I had blown the engine or busted a oil cooler line. Upon futher inspection I noticed my oil dip stick was gone. I limped it home and got my truck to try to find my dipstick. It was laying on the side of the road. I don't know why this happened. I am 99.9% sure the dip stick was seated all the way down. Has this happened to any one else? I have the stock stick in my bike. A friend of mine told me he had heard of this happening to people with the oil temperature type dip sticks.

I've heard of this before, but can't remember if it was a particular dipstick or not. Also believe this happened to someone on a SEFB also.

Er... umm.... yeah I have heard of this before (ask Erniezap how long it took him to clean the oil off his bike when mine blew out in front of him )

Mine had never blown out before until the morning of the Fort Bragg ride. We had been rolling along through the twisties when a long open straight section of road appeared. i rompt on it and at about 110 I looked to see who was with me and all I saw was the smoke and Ernie coming up fast trying to get my attention. Mine had come out but not completely. The morning before the ride  quickly checked my oil and added some and did not re-check it. I overfilled it.

The cause of this is most always overfilling your oil. Do not go above 1/2 way between full and add on the dipstick and make sure that you clean the spout and dipstick of all oil so that it seats better.

I had toped my oil off the day before it wasn't above the full mark and was checked hot. I guess you are right not that it shouldn't be filled above the half way mark on the dip stick, and I will definetly clean the spout and seal before inserting it.

Simply as an alternative to consider if anyone is having this problem too regularly (more than once?).  Feuling make a kit that vents pressure in this chamber to keep the dipstick from blowing out.

Hey 2up,

I had the same problem on my 2003 Road King.  It has the tempature dip stick and we were riding one great evening, I throttled up and a big cloud of white smoke appeared in the mirrors.  Just had the oil changed by a HD Dealership, did not check to see if the dip stick was seated, but I do now every time before we ride.

Have the temperatur dip stick on my 2007 SEUC and have not had a problem to date.  When that dip stick  popped on my Road King it sure made one hell of a mess, oil everywhere!!

I've never seen or experienced this.  Is it possible it could happen with the temperature dipstick?  That thing is in there pretty doggone tight.  Mine will not come out without twisting it to the left at least 1/4 turn while pulling up.  It is pretty hooked up.
