Remove rear rocker box housing by lifting rear of tank?
« on: May 23, 2007, 10:27:37 PM »

Does the fuel tank have to be removed to remove the rear rocker box housing to replace the gasket to the cylinder head or can it (tank) just be raised at the rear?  My rocker box gasket above the exhaust port weeps oil when you run at highway speeds for 1/2 hour or more.   Doesn't leak running around town.  It is from the gasket and not porosity of the head like some 110 owners have had.  I have the 2 wrenches that are shown in the service manual for removal of the rocker box cover and housing.  The same gasket was replaced under warranty 9,000 miles ago when the exhaust was changed back to stock.  Thanks in advance for anyones help.  Bob

Put a 2x4 under the rear of the tank after you unbolt it. It will raise it up more than enough for you to get to both rocker boxes.

When you lift the back of the tank be careful that it doesn't hit the front on the ignition. ;)

Boatman,
It is a very tight fit. I removed the rear rocker box with the tank off, and could not see a safe way to replace it. I talked to a Harley tech and he informed me that even though the manual states that it has clearance for replacement, they take the front motor mount off to gain clearance. I did that and it was still really tight but it went on with no leaks. Good luck!

One thing to add also is that it makes it a lot easier (gives you more room) if you remove the console before you raise the tank.

Thanks for the insite fellows.

Mikey-Thanks for the picture.  That is where mine leaked the 1st time under warranty (but not nearly that bad).  Now it weeps to the left of the exhaust area.

It (leak) looks like it would be where the J shaped spot in the gasket is.  Anybody ever get lucky with a loose bolt(s).

Bob, yeah, it will.  But it's so damned tight, and it's so simple to go ahead and take the tank off why mess with it.  It's easier not to have the extra crap in the way to worry about.  At least for me.

I've got to agree, Its only a couple of bolts and the fuel line to deal with. Take the tank off, you'll be happy you did!

Thanks again.  I wish I knew it was weeping when I did the 575's last fall.  Could have done the Zipper's pushrods then too.  At least I'll be able to see if the springs are rubbing.  Rode to work about 8 miles this am under 50 mph and no leak.  It is weeping right where the breather valley would be at the back side of the rocker box.

Have you got a crossover line with the quick disconnect in it?  If not it's as good a time as any to get one.  Makes taking the tank off next time just that much easier.

Speaking of those would this be the item for my bike? - Harley Quick Disconnect Fuel Line Crossover Tube . I still can't get my fat hands under the tank to put my orange plug wires on when I lift it. Thinking about getting this so I can get the tank off, and then I'll be able to clean the top of my rocker boxes off. ;D

Gary, the guy doesn't give a fitment list in his ad so I walked out to try to measure mine.  Can't effectively lay a tape along the fuel line as it crosses under there so tried to get a measure of part of it from each side.  The one I've got is 11-11.5" from end to end.

You'll have a little it of leeway as the line can be pushed more or less farther up the tank nipples on each side.  Since the seller is saying his line there is 11.5" I'd guess it'd work.  Though I'd still ask him first to see if he'd confirm it.

Fuel tank disconnect-

A fellow on Harley Tech Talk under "swap meet" has the 1/4" and 5/16" (ours I believe is 5/16" hose) stainless quick disconnects with viton seals for $35 including shipping.  We would have to come up with what type hose to use (rubber, chrome, etc)..  The ends of the quick disconnect is barbed for a pushon hose w/clamp.

Question about the one Gary has pictured.  The coupler is in the middle.  Can you get to it to release it in front of the coil?

Also, on Gary's picture, are there hose clamps behind the nuts shown on the ends of the line?

It looks if we bought a coupler, bought the stainless hose, we could put the coupler anywhere we wanted it?

Trying to work it from the front or side would be a pain in the arse.  It's easy to work from the saddle though.  Just lean over and reach around the tank.

Thanks. I'll send him an email and see what he says. Next time I'm at a dealership I'll try to remember to measure the OEM line at parts dept.
