If the leak could get significantly worse do it now. If by it's nature it can't get worse wait til you get back. If that means getting it fixed now, explain your concerns to your dealer and see if they can provide you with a loaner should there be a problem.   I would still do a couple hundred mile shake down when you get it back prior to your departure.

The loaner that I have is it, and no way can I go on that....   If only I had a crystal testicle, I'd know what to do... :nixweiss:

Go with it the way it is!!! Let the dealer fix it when riding season is over or when the current motor quits then they can just do a swap out (no rebuild) :)

Wayne,
The only issue I would have with that, is that Jim did the "weld" himself.  That wasn't done by the dealer.  So, in my way of thinking, if something were to happen, the dealership may opt out and say it's not a warranty repair anymore because he drove with a non-authorized temporary repair and assumed all responsiblity if something were to happen.  Jim could end up taking it in shorts, warranty-wise, if he doesn't get it fixed "properly" by the dealer.  This is in no way any insinuation that the "weld" repair that Jim actually did was improper or sub-standard from an actual fix standpoint of view, but from a warranty/legal standpoint only.  I see a potential out for the MoCo, if something were to happen and they could somehow tie it to Jim driving the bike with that "un-authorized" repair.  Just my humble opinion on that... :-\

The choice has kind of been taken away from me it seems, Charlie.  Work was scheduled to start tomorrow, as you know.

The Moco have failed to come up with head gaskets, which are on back order, and they are at this point unable to give me an ETA on them...... :nixweiss:

Jim,
That sucks...just when you think things might be going someplace, then they drop that bomb on you.  :(  Sorry to hear that, but like you said it looks like the decision has been made for you.  I doubt seriously, even if they get the parts by the end of the week, that they'd have the ride ready for you now.  Sorry to hear that Jim... :-\

Jim,

Either way has its drawbacks and positives.  Sounds like no head gasket from the MoCo has made your decision for you.

Have a great vacation and give us a report when you return!

Well, it's kind of a relief, Charlie - I have no quandary now, I just have to trust in my "J-B Weld"!  And, of course, if it fails, I can shout at HD for 1) not coming up with the parts in time, despite having weeks and weeks to do so & 2) giving me a loaner that is in no way suitable for a 4500 mile trip....

Jim, JB Weld is great stuff.  Use it all the time for a wide variety of 'fixes'.  Might be a good idea to carry some along in your tool bag.   :2vrolijk_21:

Jim, IMO, if the JB Weld is holding up as you say, I'd take the bike. Bring more JB Weld with you in case you need to do a roadside repair. Your rebuild might not get done in time as well as possibly finding other issues when it's diassembled. If you think it's running well and reliably now. Why not wait until you return to rebuild it. Have they authorized you to continue riding the bike with this repair? If so, don't worry about it. It's a tough call, but if your fix is working, just ride the bike and fix it later. If they haven't authorized you to continue using the bike, I might not want to assume the risk myself on a long trip. Your issue is unique. You have the opportunity to do a Timkin Conversion and Welded Flywheel bottom end now. Are you taking advantage of having your cases split for that? Something to think about. If I need a engine, I hope they give me a choice of new or rebuild. Good luck. Hoist! 8)

Tell me more on the Timken Conversion and Welded Flywheel Howie?  They are new to me.

Trouble is, Charlie, I don't know how much I trust the dealer to build it.  They have one - very tiny - workshop, with ALL the work going on in there.  Not the best environment at all. Not even a bench really.....

And what if:  They strip the engine and find another problem, like the  crankshaft end float that others have had?  They put it back together, and one seal, or gasket, a long way back in the build leaks? They start to rebuild it and find that they are short of some item or other that HD don't have in stock in the UK? They don't even use Loctite - they use some 3rd party stuff that I've not heard of. It may be fine, I don't know - but I think they have just the one grade, not the several sealer and locker grades that HD specify.

Time is just too tight for me to trust in it all going perfectly....  :nixweiss: :confused5: :-\

Sounds like you have already made the decision Jim.

Hope it all works out OK - that cold beer will be there in Fuengirola waiting for your attention.

Keep us in the loop with your progress. I'll pm you my mobile number.
