Moved the XM antenna out of the fairing this morning when I mounted the new Clearview shield on the Jester.

Same location as the pic dfrny posted on page 9 of this thread - left top side of inner fairing.  Works MUCH better now - gets some reception in the garage even.

May re-mount it where Chief has his - between the windshiled bags (also a pic on page 9 of this).  Wanted to try it "free & clear" first.  What a difference!  :2vrolijk_21:

Made such a huge difference on mine, Mike, that it's almost all I listen to now when riding.  Rarely lose a signal, where before I was constantly frustrated with the system.

Same here Terry - very frustrated before with the lousy reception.  Appears 100% improved.

Thanks to you & all in this thread that gave the recommendation to move the darn thing.  Not hard to do - just get a blow drier, heat the antenna mount, and the tape came loose fairly easily.

Another one of those weird/odd deals - why did the MoCo opt to leave it in INSIDE the fairing?  Lotsa places to mount it externally.  Sometimes I wonder if these bikes are fully tested or if we are the testers & they consider us "Beta Riders"?

If you test the damn things out in BFE somewhere, with wide open spaces, the XM would work fine.  No, I don't think they test chit in the real world 3/4 of the population lives in.  With the leather dash on our bikes, it would have been relatively simple to accomodate the XM antenna external to the fairing.  I've come to the conclusion that HD has the same attitude that Ma Bell used to have and that Lilly Tomlin portrayed so well..."We don't care, we don't have to".  Needs to be their logo....

Think of how many owners are out there who are not members of this forum, and are unable to figure stuff out on their own.  It's no wonder there are so many used bikes on the market right now.  I love my bike, but quite honestly, if I were purchasing right now, I'd probably own a BMW 1200GT or LT.  But then I'd have to buy a new wardrobe... ;) ;D

Lost track of this one.  Clearview has been on for awhile now.  I haven't noticed a difference.  Every once in a great while I'll lose reception.  Renea and I spent alot of time on AL 35 northbound yesterday from AL 9 through Fort Payne, through Scottsboro and continued on AL 35 to US 72.  Never once lost reception, and there are plenty of trees and cliffs on AL 35.  I usually lose reception in heavy canopy and when going under overpasses.  I'm not sure anything can be done about that.  Gonna leave mine as is.

It's a reflection/refraxion/regurgitation thing.    You lean over and hold your head just right.  It causes the signal to bounce off your dome, against the specially tinted refractory covering on the speedometer lens.  The signal than bounces back to your head in its new spread spectrum and beams forward toward the antenna where it pukes out all the music.

As a young man I have unswallowed more than my fair share of the chilled malted beverage so I have a strong understanding of the mechanics involved. I get the part where the head is involved and I’m with you through the speedometer bit, but I’m having trouble visualizing the rest. Maybe you could attach a short avi, or a line drawing if you are good with a pencil. TIA :)

Don't have any explanation for the differences people experience with the XM reception...mine WORKED before, but was not optimal.  But some folks seem to have the stars all lined up right, so have better reception on their particular bike.  My stars are usually all f'd up.

One of the most important things on the Clearview (off topic) is to get the proper height windshield.  As tall as you are, Henry, I would think you'd need one in the 10" range to work effectively, if not taller.  If you can see a spot approx 50 feet on the ground in front of the bike, in "normal" riding position, looking over the windshield (top of shield at about nose level), then the height is about right.  Anything shorter, and there will be no significant improvement over a stock shield of the same height. It will help SOME, but if your gourd's up in the wind, it's up in the wind, and no amount of recurve is going to help if it's not tall enough.  If it's taller than the stock 6" shield, it may not look as good, but in this case, for me at least, it's function over form.  The stock shield that came on my bike was too short, even for my dwarf a$$.

LOL

Most obvious MoCo external antenna mounting spot would be on top of the RECESSED leather dash, with a "XM recessed mounting rectangle - adapter kit $49.85" -2 x 2 inch piece of steel black powder coated with 4 holes drilled into it to make it impossible for non CVO owners to use a CVO leather dash and vice versa. The MoCo would care if enough folks stopped buying their bikes and their weird-assed accessories that are highly individualized for each bike.

Agreed on the BMWs of it was just about handling, speed, and power.  The Beemer guys around here dress like they are on an Alpine riding exhibition and quite a few are too cool to wave.  Or maybe they are adding the extra latte by hand switch to their caramel latte machiatta espresso about to be dispensed fresh ground & brewed from their BMW on handlebar espresso machine?   ;D

On a birghter note, am considering blasting the stereo until the speakers blow out so I can upgrade quicker and not feel as bad about apending $$$$.   :huepfenjump3:

Continuing OT, I have the 9.5", and it works very well.  I think his name is John...............the gentleman at Clearview.................he said that is the one I would need based on my bike and my height.  He's right.  I get just enough wind.  I'm very happy with my Clearview.............much happier with it than the stock W/S.  And Renea loves it too.  Didn't do much to shield us from yesterday's heat tho'.  Nor did the Freedom Wings.  About all we could do was drink lots of water and get through it.

Make no mistake about it, I truly love my bike, and hope it will be with me for many years, as I have no intention of owning anything else in the next 5-7 years.  But with some of the problems you guys with the 110's have been dealt because of the MOCO either not sufficiently testing, or doing so and knowing full well that the problems are there and just letting the consumer deal with it after the fact, I would have lost my chit in a couple of cases.  I'm not talking about just a leaky gasket, but after two or three times with it, it would not be a pretty picture, just for the principle of the thing.   :soapbox: :soapbox:  I have thus far been fortunate, or been able to fix the small things myself, mostly because I enjoy the tinkering.

I know exactly what you mean about the Beemer people (generalizing here)....they wear funny clothes.  ;)  Most of 'em around here will still wave though.  They probably think we're even weirder, with our devotion to not only the bikes, but the clothing as well...."The Look".  And devotion to, by any sane measurement, a vastly inferior product technologically and mechanically.  But they don't unerstand... ;)

Just put "Whipping Post" (the Filmore East version) in the CD player and crank her up with full bass and treble...or just the entire FE CD....that should do the trick.  I'm still waiting on those Bose helmet headsets...

:2vrolijk_21: My sentiments exactly.  And it won't change until we quit blindly paying top dollar for half baked crap.  May not happen in what's left of my lifetime, but eventually they'll either have to get it right or fade from the picture.  I don't think future generations will give them the free pass that my generation has.

I have been fortunate - no 110 problems other than heat.  I had planned to add true duals stage 1 and race tune it anyway so that took care of that and if I had not done those adds expect it would be fried at some point.

Rode Deals Gap with some Beemers a while back.   They had me lead.  Kinda surreal - they never wanted to pass or anything.  I left 1/2 of the rubber from my rear tire on that road as best I remember.  :huepfenlol2:

Exellent taste in music Bro!  Whipping Post/FE album.  Eat a Peach alone blew out at least 8 car stereo speakers.

On the Bose headset - unless Bose offerrs one, I have 'cut the way more expensive than I figured wires fear' & so far cannot overcome it.  ;D
