Got Ting, not Ping.....
« on: May 29, 2007, 01:52:12 PM »

So...I finally set the beast free the other day, to see what this big 110" could do !   I'll tell ya it moved my Dyna prety quick !!  :bananarock:   But since then I've had this irritating little "TING"  Sounds like it might be comming from the cam case...but it is really hard to hear exactly where it's comming from, as it only seems to make the noise while it's rolling at about 2500 rpm. At first, it sounded just like a heat sheild clamp...so I tightend them down, and still have the noise...I've been reading through threads, but thought I'd ask if anyone had this happened?  I'm thinking it might be a tooth on the cam  :nixweiss:

Most likely it's one of the valve spring retainers hitting the side of the rocker box.  there have been many such complaints.  I had the same thing on my '07 ultra cvo, but the dealer said it was normal.  On mine it sounded like it was coming from the front cylinder, so I decided to remove the rocker box myself.

I found that the front intake valve was indeed hitting the side of the rocker box.  I understand that these engines use full size springs and retainers as opposed to the "bee hive" design on other twin cams.  Anyway, tolerances are very close now.  I clearanced the rocker box and gave it about .010".  The "ting" is all gone now.

Try telling the dealer that you've heard of others having valves hitting the rocker box.  Others have had it warrantied, so Harley knows of the problem.

Jack, definitely Rocker Box Clearance issues. Mine does the same thing. Getting that and the head gaskets replaced next week! Bring it back for clearancing and check your rear head gasket under the exhaust flange. If it's wet, get both of them replaced too! Hoist! 8)

We had one that was hitting hard enough that it was allowing the valve stem locks to come loose. One was out the other was still holding on. I was amazed that it did not drop the valve. The cast parts are going to vary in size, some quick work on the mill cleanes them up, for the home guys use of a dremel will get the job done nicely. Just make sure to clean up the parts really good. For getting the proper clearance. Wrap the spring in electrical tape, 3 complete wraps will give you plenty of room. We are also seeing a old issue pop up. That would be rockers hitting the top cover. I have not seen this since 99 2000 bikes. SO if you are in there check that out as well.

GMR, do you believe these new 1 piece 'beehive" springs are adequate to take the 550 lift cams that come stock with these 110's, let alone up to 570 lift as they say they can? Wondering whether to replace these springs when they have the top end apart next week. Thanks. Hoist! 8)

Hoist,

The springs in the 07 ultra will handle the 260 cam lift which is .609.    I doubled checked the stage 2 kit with the heads that are on our bikes from the factory by calling spock and harley tech and they confirmed they are one in the same heads.  So to answer your question there is no problem with a .575 lift.

Hoist,  A small correction in your post.  The 110's don't use the "bee hive" design.  That's why the standard 110 springs are hitting the rocker box

Thank you for the correction. Is that the design on the 96"? I was told they went to that this year. I'm sticking with the stock 110" springs in my rework. Hoist! 8)

Thank you so much for the input guys !!   :2vrolijk_21:   one more question for ya, if you guys will read this tread again?  :nixweiss:  Now that I now what the sound is...and how to go about fixing it.....how long do you guys think it will take for somethng to actually break in there??  I figure I can live with the noise for the summer, ride the hell out of it, and bring it in this winter to have it taken apart and fixed? I know...half of you guys will read this and "cringe"  :'(.....and the other half will smile and say " ride it like you stole it" !!!  ;D

Can I ask why you wouldn't take it in now and get it fixed? It can be fixed in less than a day and it won't cost you anything. And it will be sooooo much more enjoyable to ride when you get it fixed.

That's an understandable question !!    I have no faith in the dealers around here in Massachusetts, Ive had problems in the past....usually takes them longer than they tell you it's going to, so I'm without the bike for longer than I expected, then on top of that...I've had to go back for problems that happened after it's been in the shop, and sometimews for the same problem it went in for to begin with !  So I figured instead of playing the " dealer/ warranty" game I would wait untill winter and let them keep it as long as they want to.
