Oil Cooler Question
« on: June 03, 2007, 12:11:06 AM »

Is the bottom of the oil cooler cover supposed to be mounted on top of the oil cooler mounting bracket or on the bottom?  Before I had my oil cooler hose failure on the way to Rolling Thunder, the bottom of the oil cooler cover was mounted on top of the oil cooler mounting bracket.  After HD of Washington replaced the failed hose, the bottom of the oil cooler cover was mounted on the bottom of the oil cooler mounting bracket.  The service manual supplement doesn't stipulate, and the parts manual doesn't illustrate.  Before the failure, the cover always seemed wobbly and flimsy.  Now it is solid as a rock.  I like it better mounted the way it is, but just for chits and grins, does anyone know the CORRECT way the cover is supposed to be mounted to the bracket?

Not gonna bust your chops.  I save that for the deserving!  :D ;D  Anyway, yep, mine was mounted just like your's before my oil cooler line failure.  Now that black oil cooler bracket is inside the oil cooler cover.  Just wondering.  It works, and it looks a he!! of alot better than it did before, and it feels alot more solid.  Thanks much for sharing Bro.  You're a good Man.  Now go wash your scoot.   :D ;D :P

Another one of those nights that I'm just up & wired. I'm already worrying about having to get up at 5 o'clock in the morning at Chief's house for the Hot Damn Springs trip! Maybe if I go to sleep now I'll be able to wake up early.  ;D

I do that all the time...........stay up wired, that is.  I'm an insomniac.  Suppose I could put the time to good use and study.............nah, that's no fun.

Split in a bend in the top hose.  It looked like it blew out to me, but the tech said it started as a split, and grew with the heat and pressure until it finally let go.  They wouldn't let me have it.............said it had to go back to the MOCO since it was replaced under warranty.  I'm betting there was some chaffing going on.  It's tight in there.  I picked up some scrap anti chaff material from our PIF.  Once I get another free afternoon, I'll wrap the hoses.

Mine was mounted the same way as yours from the factory.  Since I remove mine everytime I change oil (use brake clean to clean up as oil always drips from the filter), I mounted mine the same way the dealer mounted yours (on outside of bracket).  Why?  Because it is easier to remove and install that way!  Dealer taking shortcut, however in this case, it is not a bad idea.

That's what I was thinking.  I was gonna leave it that way anyway since it is alot more sturdy mounted that way, and it looks so much better.

About getting oil all over the place.........I don't do that anymore.  Take an empty plastic Walmart bag and slide it under the filter and drape it over the voltage regulator and oil cooler so it forms a pool under the filter.  Then get one of those freezer bags and get it around the filter and housing the best you can.  Loosen the filter til you can spin it with your fingers.  Gather up the freezer bag around the filter and housing and spin the filter with your fingers until plops into the freezer bag.  Most all of the oil will go into the freezer bag with the filter, and what doesn't, will go onto the Walmart bag below.  Lift the freezer bag, filter and oil away from the bike and dispose of properly.  Then gather up the corners of the freezer bag, lift it out and dispose of properly.  I've done this so many times that it is a rare occasion for me to spill even a drop.  Ususlly 90% of the oil goes into the freezer bag, and 10% goes onto the Walmart bag.  While the Walmart bag is still in place, stuff a Dickies rag over the oil filter housing to prevent and residual oil from dripping.  Works good.  Lasts a long time.  JMHO.  Hope this helps.
