Oklahoma trip
« on: June 03, 2007, 11:14:55 AM »

I had a short window to take a short day and a half trip. My wife is still out of commission with knee surgery, so my 11 year old son graciously volunteered to fill in. LOL  I got him out of wschool early Friday and we headed from N. Texas to the southern part of Oklahoma  to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife refuge. From there we headed west towards the Quartz mountain range going through Great Plains State park. As usual, met some very nice people along the way, and my son, although very tired, had a great time. Here's aphoto from Mt. Scot

Finally, one of the bike at the top of the mountain. All told, we were gone 26 hours, missed two super cell thunder storms, had a great father / son time, and covered 495 miles.

GC,
Great pictures thanks for sharing. :2vrolijk_21: What a blast that must have been for you son. I'll bet he'll be the coolest guy in his class on Monday telling all the stories of his ride.

Thanks dOOd.  He'll probably forget the part about the pain in his butt, and how tired he was, but even the adults forget those topics.   ;D

Yes. The mountain range starts just west of Lawton. We stayed at a Best Western in Lawton the first nite. Great place to stay. Two pools, hot tub, good resturant, free buffet breakfast, very secure, etc.

Looks and sounds like you had a great trip...You should have called me :D  I actually was going to go down to experience the mayhem of ROT, but I stayed home with my 16 year old (wife and daughter we at a horse show).

That's a great little trip from north Texas.  A friend of mine rode up last May to visit a friend.  We rode about 500 miles round trip in one day, but the roads up and around the mtn. are pretty cool.

Here is a shot or two from that trip...(disclaimer..pre CVO)

On top of the same mountain

At a biker store called..Chaps my ass...Cool name (I am on the far right)

At a great burger place close to where you were riding... (I am the young good looking one here ;D)

BTW, what type of tour pack bag are you using in this pic?

John,

I thought you mentioned you were going to ROT.  We will definately go back and do this ride again. We are always looking for places to ride, and most are pretty far away, but this makes a good short weekend trip. Since we returned, three people have mentioned the Meers burgers. Wished we would have known about that place sooner.

The bag that's on the tour pack is and old HD bag I've had for years. Knowing it was going to be hot, I wanted to use my saddlebag ice chest for drinks, so we used that HD bag for my son's overnite bag.  I bought a Kuryakyn roll bag, but I'll be damed if I can find a good way to strap it down where it's still easy to use. A round bag on a round rack just doesn't want to stay put.  I'm still looking for something that fits good and not be to heavy.

I'll give you a holler next time. Seems like we're getting a pretty good N. Tx group here. We need to plan a meet and greet before the summer heat takes over.

Later, Robert
