Serk Road Glide
« on: June 03, 2007, 03:11:35 PM »

I have seen a lot of Electra Glide fairings on Serks. I am thinking of setting my 03 up as a Road Glide.
Has any one done this?
I think it would be real sharp.
I have lined up a few used outer fairings and I am trying to put together a parts list of every thing else.
I don't want to sell and buy another bike.
Any input is appreciated.

No reason for abuse. Lots of folks on the site have done this. I had set up Elvis at one point as an Electra-Glide. The owner of the site Naitam (Neal) has his 02 SERK set up as an EG. Gilligan's 03 SERK is set up as an EG. The only problem I have with your post is you also say Road Glide and that's a horse of a different color. Anyway, assuming your intention is to make your 03 SERK into an EG, you'll want to check out Dragonfly fairings and Hoppe fairings and decide which best suits your purpose. The Dragonfly is more like the stock H-D batwing fairings and is semi-permanent once installed. The Hoppe looks like a batwing, but the angle it mounts to the bike is different due to it being a quick detach set-up which utilizes chrome brackets very similar to the stock SERK windshield brkts. There's several threads on this in the section of the web-site specific to SERKs. Check those out, go online and look at Dragonfly and Hoppe and if you still have questions, that's what we're here for. Good luck

I appreciate the reply. I have seen the EG's. Although they are nice, I want to go with the Road Glide fairing. I always ride with a full windshield anyway , so i don't expect to take the fairing off and go back to the RK look any time.
I know it will take a lot of work, and money.
I'm a little dissapointed the 100th anniversary SERK did't retain the value I thought it would. Probably because of the color. If I sold it I would take a beating. I only have 5k on it. The Road Glide look would definitely be different on the Gold bike.

Hi Diese1nut, I'm also interested in doing that.  Prices vary, not sure which is the best quality and personally I would struggle to get the paint matched.  But it's still a project I'm looking into.
Keep me posted

Does anyone remember if Leo's was a Road Glide that became a SEEG Road Glide or a SEEG first that got the fairing after the accident?  If his was added later he might have a parts list.

Turning a SERK into a Road Glide could be a pretty expensive proposition. My advice would be to go to your dealer and buy a parts manual for an 03 Road Glide. The parts manual will have everything in exploded diagram so it's easy to see what you need. Basically you're going to be taking the entire nacelle apart and off the bike, adding the brkts that hold the fairin to the steering head of the frame and to the front engine guard (crash bar) and then bolting the inner fairing to the steering head brkt, hooking up all of your electicals (headlight etc) and the installing the outer fairing shell. I'm gonna guess the parts for this change will run you in excess of $2k in primer, plus electricals. I'd like to see an 03 SERG in Centennial Gold. Gilligan probably has the best example of an 03 SEEG made from an 03 SERK. One thing to look out for. When you get around to paint, the PPG paint code for the 03 Centennial Gold DOES NOT match. Your painter will need to have his supplier custom mix to your bike. For whatever reason, every 03 SERK I've ever seen is a slightly different shade. Maybe it's exposure to light in addition to the MoCo's lack of QA on their paint, but they are all different. So be aware of that. And you know it'd be cool if you could post some pictures as you work your way through this build ( or should I say rebuild )

Best of luck to you

I thought about changing my serk over to an ultra classic.  I see a lot of firings with a radio and speakers.  I think I'd want the full Harley fairing with the gauges in it.  THis probably will not be something I persue as it will cost a fortune and take way too much patience.  Meanwhile this winter I will send my wheels off for chroming, the polished aluminum is a pain for me to keep clean.

Whatever you decide to do, there's a lot of info on the site to assist - - - - - for instance, the stock 03 SERK polished spun aluminum wheels cannot be chromed because the rivets around the perimeter are stainless steel which doesn't chrome. Best you can do is polish and wax like the rest of us.

Hey, thanks for the info on not being able to chrome the wheels.  I may just get rid of them instead.  I've seen some chromed fat boy wheels or thunderstar wheels that would be close enough for me.
Thanks again

The 04 SEEGs, like Jamey's, came with the chrome that became chrome peelers.  He was lucky enough to get a dealer that would swap them out for the chrome thunderstar wheels.  They look real nice.  If your at the next meeting, come check them out.

Your best bet for something that retains the stock look of the 03 SERK would be the Mirror Chrome Solid Disc Wheel P/N 41274-03 Front and 41268-03 Rear $999.95 each. Might check with Chicago H-D and see if you can get them through there for 20% off. Also, hang onto your stock wheels; polish them up, wax em good and store em somewhere. They don't sell as most people that have em have the same issue - - - - --  polishing them and others are aware of it.

Thanks for all the replies.
If you want to know something you can sure find it here.
The tips on the paint are so true. Paint match is very difficult, yet up most important.
The link on the eg that was converted was very helpful.
I don't think my conversion at least electrically will be as difficult. I plan to leave the speedo and tach if possible.
I got a lot of help from the Vrod conversion to the Roadrod. Nice job. See cycleVisions.com
This won't happen for a little while due to a back injury, but when it does I will try to document the process and take pictures.
I also got some info on a good painter over in Maine, from another post.
Thanks agian.
Keep comments comming.

Don, as I recall it was a RG that became an SE after he slide into third base in the rain near Klamath Falls.

He got it painted to match the SEEG.
