Installation Chrome Starter Solenoid Cover
« on: June 10, 2007, 09:50:18 PM »

Okay, so today I bought the chrome starter solenoid cover.  Easy upgrade, or so I thought...

After getting the bolts out (covered in wrinkle paint), I tried to pull the factory cover off only to realize that the factory cover has been encased in wrinkle paint and fused to the starter.

This is ridiculous!

I thought about using a razor blade to cut through it, but it is several millimeters thick and then I could maybe only get two sides of it.  Then I would be forced to twist or slowly bend it off and I know that it will cause the paint to flake off the starter.

How am I supposed to get the old one off without breaking the seal and having all the wrinkle coating flake off the starter?

Has anyone else had this issue?

I can't help you out, but it's amazing how some of these easy looking projects aren't so easy.   :confused5:

I just did this mod and it seems everything I've done to my bike always has some kind of annoying situation like this. I ended up going to the other side of the bike (primary side) and putting the blade of a flat screwdriver against the edge of the solenoid cover ,which stuck up ever so slightly from the housing, then as gently as I could I pushed toward the other side and the cover popped right off. Hope this helps, just be careful the screwdriver doesn't hit anything.

b, mine was sorta tough to get off, too.  There's a gasket between the cover and the starter housing that I think is holding it on (restricting it) more than the paint.  You should be able to get it off if you wiggle it back and forth while pulling on it.

Got it off, I had to use a straight screwdriver and a hammer and lightly tap around the inside seam of the cover.  It was the paint that sealed it shut.  I will see if I can get some good pics of it.  The paint was so thick that it flowed into the gasket as well and sealed the cover onto the solenoid.
