oil leak
« on: June 14, 2007, 04:00:10 PM »

i have 9800mi on my FLHRSE3, just noticed the rear head gasket is leaking, looks like the base is too. called and scheduled an appointment for warranty work. 6/25 is it. have the gaskets been changed? the front looks ok but. i have done a search and seems to be a common deal.
should i request checking other noted problems, rocker box clearance for one.

i hate to pay for this but i have a great indy wrench.... :nixweiss:...

direction please

Gaskets have been changed, so I would try and get them to do both cylinders.

Hey Tennessee, head gaskets have an '07A Part Number now, so make them do both, so both cylinders match compression. And have them clearance both rocker boxes while they're off. If they're doing base  gaskets, you might want to lightly hone the cylinders and put new rings in. Very minor additional P&L while they have everything apart. Hoist! 8)

Why would you pay.  :nixweiss: That's why you have a warranty, or don't you trust your Dealer?? The wife's bike goes in 6/25 also for new head gaskets and rocker box clearancing. 6800 miles on the bike.

I just discovered that at 3900mi the SERK is leaving a small spot on the ground.  I t is dripping off of the frame near the tranny.  As far as I can see it is behind the primary.  The top end looks ok.  It seems to always want more engine oil to show full on the digital dip stick.

Any ideas?

I wanted to go up to Laconia tomorrow for the last two days.   On Sunday I was up there in traffic, 80 degrees and saw 255 on the oil temp.  I'm more worried abot the oil getting on the tire and brakes than the mess.

If they don't see a problem with the front cylinder they will probably charge you to do it. Might be Worth it though! Hey charge for everything they can, at least here at Thunder Mountain! They charged my friend .2 hrs, a little over $19.00 to test ride looking for a problem during his first 1000 mile service!!!!

Not that I know of, but maybe a Sticky Thread should be started in the Twin Cam Section to address these issues and their resolutions, so they're all in one place. If we can have that I'll be happy to start it. If it's going to become a discussion thread, stuff will start getting lost in it. This information is currently scattered everywhere throughout the site. What do you think mods? Hoist! 8)

Not a bad idea.  Some of the problems are multiple similar occurrences, and others are more of a one-off type.  It would be good to differentiate between the 2, with engine/tranny/drivetrain of primary interest.

this may sound silly, but have you checked to see if your oil dipstick is secure.
i noticed some oil on the floor of the garage and sure enough it was the o-ring on the dipstick. it leaked more at highway speeds.
start with the easy stuff first.
255 is pretty high on the oil temp side for only 80 degrees.
are you sure the gauge is accurate??

Did check the dipstick.  No issues there.  I added oil.  I'll ride it 3-400 this weekend and see how it goes.  I have an appointment next Friday.  The swingarm has oil and the chainguard.  I'm thinking seals behind primary.

The gauge is accurate.  In Myrtle beach it went to 288 degrees. 85 degrees temp.

Thanks

I did not volunteer for the option firmware upgrade that allows shutting down the rear cylinder.  It smelled and gave off some heat but it ran.
