Tick Tick Tick
« on: June 14, 2007, 04:40:10 PM »

I just got my SEUC. It has a valve train noise like a lifter. The dealer says it's OK, but it was allot quieter 600 miles ago. The engine is starting to free up, but this is a tick tick tick around the front cylinder valve lifter area. Everthing is non adjustable now adays, so WTH??

I have that and a whine when I go into first gear.  I plan to speak to the dealership on Monday.  I'll keep you posted.

By the way, do you find it easy to put the bike in neutral from a stationary position and the engine ticking over.?

Some of your nomenclature is a little off, but I'm guessing you mean you hear the ticking down at the lifter block ? Also, in my experience, most people describe lifter noise as " clatter " and not ticking, so that's a bit confusing, since ticking is more what you hear when you're running low octane gas at high altitude and your engine is actually detonating or what you hear when a hot motor cools down in a cool garage. I say this not to be a smartass, but to ascertain exactly what it is you're hearing.

Anyway, hydraulic lifters do on occasion stick open or closed and as such there is a hellacious clatter because the pushrod has a bunch of play in it. You hear people say " the lifter collapsed" or " the lifter isn't pumping up "  Sometimes lifters fail and this happens, sometimes they get some dirt in the oil passages and do this.WIthout hearing your bike it's hard to say.  I can tell you from personal experience, oil viscosity can make one hell of a difference in the noise factor. You'll see a ton of threads on the site discussing what people use for fluids. My personal preference is AMSOIL as in my opinion, it runs cooler and a lot quieter; but that's not to say that some of the other top shelf fluids do not do the same thing. One thing we all agree on is that Syn3 gives you a hot and noisy engine. So anyway, given what I'm saying here can you add anything to your original post ?

There have been rocker box clearance issues with some of the 110's...that may be what you are hearing.  Removal of the rocker box covers and doing a little dremel work fixes the problem.  If this is not the problem, then using a better oil may quiet the engine a bit.  Amsoil or Mobil 1 Vtwin are both excellent choices.

All of these dealers saying some of these noises are "normal".  I would ask them how many 110's they've heard this year....

If you increase the radio Volume you won't hear it - If it's a real problem - the bike will lock up and then you will have something the dealer can work with. :2vrolijk_21:

Ride it and quit listening to it!

If it's the rocker box clearance issue, it won't make you bike lock up, as you'll hear a LOT more noise prior to that happening.  Even the radio won't drown that noise out.

There's a couple of threads on here dealing with this subject...do a search on "clearancing" or Rocker Box.  It is a problem, but few of the dealers have known about the issue, from the posts on the subject.

Chief had this problem with his bike, as have a couple of others.

I only use 97 Octane gas and I think it is the same sort of ticking as a hot engine in a cold garage.
I cannot run amsoil until my warranty runs out, dealers orders....

That's good info but I don't think that ACT cover him "He's Out of town" as in Over the Pond.

The Dealer's here won't use my brand of oil (Mobil 1) if I take it to them, but they have never said my warranty would be voided by me changing it myself and using any product that meets or exceeds what they use.  Since the HD oil has no specs on it, it would be hard for them to say that something like Amsoil or Mobil I did not meet or exceed.  The law that d00d is referring you to actually requires the dealer to provide FREE OF CHARGE their oil if they refuse to use the product you bring them to use.

Of course, you are overseas, so that law does not apply, I don't suppose.  Are there any similar consumer protection laws in your country?

I am not the closest member here to DC, but if you don't mind riding 150 miles in the wee hours to a destination, please feel invited to stay with us next year, and we will actually ride up with you.  We boycotted the ride this year - first time in several years.  It was toooooo hot, but for someone from Europe to do this ride, we'd be happy to ride beside you.
