5 Models to be water cooled
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:26:44 AM »

Take it for whatever it's worth, but I heard there will be 5 models with water cooled engines.  I believe there are currently 3 Vrod models which means either 2 more Vrods or the water cooled engine will appear on 2 entirely different bikes.

Also, expect one or more special 105th anniversary models which may include a Roadglide.

Heard from who, where, what?

As usual, a well connected person quite high up who will remain uncited and nameless. In other words, I know a guy who knows a guy who's son plays ball with my son, and his maid's uncle talked to a guy who works at Harley.

Exactly.  I knew a guy who bought a dog from a guy who dumped the trash at the ad agency for HD and he said the 08's will be _________________________.

Doubtful given the investment in the 2007 96" Twin Cam engine.

I personally believe that there will always be aircooled models available, no doubt with larger displacement engines with restrictive catalytic mufflers and other eco friendly devices to meet EPA regs.

H-D is a company steeped in history and tradition. Remember it was their back to the future designs that brought them to the forefront of the heavyweight motorcycle market. The Softail Heritage, The Road King, The Softail Deluxe , The Softail Springer and The Heritage Springer. No doubt at some point they will offer a big water cooled bagger, but look to the V-rod line to expand fiirst as Bill has already detailed in his link below.

BB - well said - MoCo R & D is working to keep the air cooled motor for the forseeable future - the catalytic issue you address is one of the keys to its continuation.  Likely the baggers/dressers will go water cooled but figure the air cooled market, which HD owns, is too lucrative for them to bail out on.  Rumors aside, the marketing dollars the MoCo stands to lose on an all water cooled engine platform are staggering. So that IMHO, is doubtful.

hope everbody is right I like the air cooled engine
But Harley spent a lot of money on the water cooled engine and in 2010 the EPA is wanting more than a air cooled engine can do and keep good power.
Thats why the small air cooled aircraft engine is going away.

But maybe Harley get it done, sure hope so.

My understanding is that CARB becomes a National Requirement in '10, and that the guidelines will be stricter. If they can't make the numbers with these large air-cooled engines, they'll have no choice but to go with water-cooled. I've been saying this since they first came out with the V-Rod, that by 2010 air-cooled will be dead. Time will tell! ;) Hoist!

Hoist,
          I'll make you a bet.

Harley-Davidson will not discontinue the air cooled motor completely (not offering it on any model ) by 2010.

If you win,  I'll post a small ad in American Bagger Magazine stating that you are America's Greatest Living Motorcyclist.

If I win, you have to go a month without making a post.

DEAL ?

And by the way I thought I was America's Greatest Living Motorcyclist.
I just hate it when someone takes my title and does not tell me.

Oh yea? Well my buddy's couin's friend's desaler told him that ALL '08's will be water cooled, and all touring models will come standard with a side car. Oh, the Servicar has a jet engine!
