Got to get the clacking out of the 07 Screaming Chicken
« on: June 21, 2007, 11:14:51 PM »

Hi y'all.New here. I recently got my 07 Cherry SE. I have enjoyed the bike when running 60+ miles hour. My biggest complaint is on the clucking, clacking slapping or what ever you want to call it in the primary or transmission. I have read some threads on changing the oil in the transmission to a true synthetic gear lube 75w-90-140-250. After reading the application chart on the Mobil 1 site they (Mobile 1) do not reccomend using the gear lube in "automatic, Manual or
semiautomatic transmissions that use transmission fluid or motor oil for lubricant. I suspect that this is due to the small needle bearings in the transmissions are not receiving adequate lubrication due to there small openings. Here is my question. Has any one out there with one of the 6 speeds changed to the synthetic gear lubes and has substantial miles on it with out any problems. And it is my understanding that the Baker DD6 uses synthetic gear lube so can anyone confirm this?

Ronnie, I'm running the Redline Heavy Shockproof in my tranny.  9,000 miles and shifts extremely smoothly and no clunk, clank, etc.  I talked to Redline in light of the needle bearings and this is what they recommended.

Did you have the clatter noise in your trans, before the switch to redline?

RK2000,

Baker recommends Red Line Shockproof Heavy in their transmissions, including the DD6.

If you want a wordy but ultimately good explanation of the noise issue, get a copy of the August American Iron mag and read the Donnie Petersen tech article.  Baker offers a "fix" for the issue called the F6F, consists of a new helical 5th gear set, new trap door, and new larger bearings.  http://www.bakerdrivetrain.com/f6f/index.htm

Negative.  I changed over at my 1k service which I did at about 850 miles.  Never noticed any unusual noise from the tranny.  No clack, clunk, whine, nothing but pure bliss. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks Jerry. Did you get the Redline here locally or mail order. I do like the F6F from Baker may have to go that route if Redline or HD don't fix the noise. Mobil 1 fixed the excessive lash noise in topend of engine. Wanted more info on gear lube before I made that change.

Couldn't find any locally.  Got it via the internet from www.racerpartswholesale.com  in Indianapolis.

RK2000,

I buy my Redline by the case, mail order.  Never found a local source where I could buy it as needed.

I think before I spent $900 plus labor for the F6F I would try the Redline for a few thousand miles.  While the noise can be irritating once you tune in to it, it's not a sign of imminent failure.  Just another case of H-D coming up with a poor design, mixing straight cut and helical gears in the same gear set, plus having more gear pairs engaged at the same time than necessary.  You would think that when the MoCo copies (steals) other folks ideas (Baker DD6 in this case) they could do it without screwing it up.  IMHO, this is just another case of H-D cheapening the product and leaving it up the the customers to correct the resulting issues.

RK...just for grins, go to the Redline website and find their dealer network...there might be a local dealer near you that you'd never suspect.  I did that and found a plentiful supply at a Honda/Acura Indy shop...they use it in some of their auto applications.  I'd never have thought to look there.

Been there, done that.  All they carry is the Redline Water Wetter (anti-freeze additive).

Well, one good thing about using the Redline product in the tranny and primary is that I feel totally comfortable going 10K without changing it out, so a couple of quarts will carry you a long way.  I honestly can't say that I notice any difference in the operation of the tranny with the Shockproof over just putting Mobil I in all three holes, but as pink and sticky as that stuff is, I believe you could run the tranny dry and the gears would remain coated... ;)  You'd have to give the tranny a bath in mineral spirits to get it all out of there.  It's good stuff, no doubt.

I run Royal Purple in the Engine, Mobile1 20W50 in the primary and
AMSOIL 90/140 in the tranny and all is well except for the rear head gasket leak.
Bike runs cool with K&N filter, shifts smooth and can't hear much from the primary.

Congrats on your new bike, and welcome aboard!  IMHO, the clacking and other weird noises from the primary are coming from low speed high gear. The 1st and 5th gear are straight cut, whilst the rest are helical.  You mentioned 60mph, but, if you were in 6th gear you will be making a racket for sure.  These bikes like 2600-2900 cruising.  I rarely go into 6th, well, until around 75+ for the long cruises.  Other than these comments, I like Amsoil, period for all of the holes.

Hope thins adds a bit to the issue.

I have the same problem. SOOO much clacking and slapping it sounds like it is going to blow up at any moment.  I have met several other owners at bike rallies and they report the same noise.  I am made very uneasy by the excessive noise and it takes pleasure from the ownership and ride of the bike.  From the old days, it sounds like rod bearings that have spun and knocking it's a$$ off.  It is almost embarrassing to ride near another bike in that they may hear the s**t for noise coming from the engine, Primary or tranny.

The heat of the 500 degree oven between your legs also adds to the displeasure of owning this bike.  The only real pleasure I seem to get is when I am washing and polishing it.  Only to be brought back to reality when it is started.  I have spent several thousand dollars to cool her down but it is a no go.

Did I mention pinging?  Holy S**t.  When it gets hot it is unbelievable.

I have tried amsoil in all three holes and no difference.  I installed Red Line Shock Proof and it made no difference.

Flame me if you want!  I'm all yours, but I don't see how Harley could bring this to market like this.
