Well, I have been trying to find a lubricant that would help with the clattering in the primary. It was worse when cold but when up to temp seemed to get somewhat better which led me to beleive that viscosity was an issue. Thinner mixtures helped when cold but did not cure problem. Have used Syn3, Amsoil, Mobil1, still had problem. Then I remembered my old fix for many problems. LUCAS OIL STABILIZER. I used Castrol Syntax Fully Synthetic with about 25% LAS and noise is acceptable, not gone completely but tolerable. Now I can at least hear all of the engine pinging, rattles, etc better and maybe work with them. I know that the motor will eventually be replaced but hoping to wait until MOCO gets a good idea of exactly what needs to be done on the improved engines. I hate to change it now and have more improvements at a later date that I missed. LAS will also keep oil from breaking down as fast thus extending the fix for awhile longer. I had found that Amsoil helped at first but after 1000 miles noise resurfaced.
You could have a primary chain adjuster problem.
Do you have warr...ty?  Get them to check it and fix it.
I lost a primary chain due to the adjuster.

I had the Dealer look into it when it was in for service. The w/o said they made adjustment to the adjuster. No change in noise. Still clacking. Going to try the I.D.S. when get some time to see if that helps.

Vagabond, I noticed when I changed my primary fluid that there was much fiber material in bottom of casind and on the drain plug. I am assuming that this is from the shoes on the tensioner. How much is normal. The only bagger that I have owned prior to this ultra was an 03 Classic EG which did not have lowers. I realize that the noise is amplified by having lowers but it is almost unbearable at times. The whine is getting worse. From experience, it takes alot of pressure to make those gears whine. The clacking is most apparent at gradual throttle from 2400 to 2700 rpm. It is not as apparent if I get into the throttle heavily. Kinda hard to do puttering around town. Like I said, the noise seems to calm down considerably after about 30 miles or when primary gets warm. Its a damn bummer for sure.

I agree that a stealer should look at it and if you can find me one that does not say that every noise that these 07 CUSE's make is normal, I would be happy to take it to one. I have a seven year Warr. I am afraid that if one more tells me I am crazy and they are supposed to sound like that, I am going to Kamikaze the POS into their dealer showroom......

RK2000 , I had the same problems, had to fix it or sell it. 07 R/B Built 8/06...  Had the IDS and Baker F6F installed, you wouldn't know it's the same bike. All the gears are the same no clatter or whinning. Very happy now, 1600.00 poorer though. Had the rocker box clearance and rear head gasket fixed at the same time.  4200 miles on bike.

Thanks Dan. I am going to make a run at it this winter when I have some time off. I'm starting to hear the ticking from the rocker arm interference between 2200 and 3200 RPM. No head gasket leaks yet. "KNOCK ON A BIG PIECE OF WOOD", but got only 4500 miles on it now.

You got tensioner problems. Get it to a reputable dealer. Your clacking is coming from the engine pulses. The clacking would be the first sign of primary difficulty, the chain is not tensioned correctly.
I lost my primary at 6171 miles.
While you are in the shop, have them check the engine static timing. It could be to far advanced.

There is no adjustment on the tensioner so what could be bad. Isn't it a spring tensioner? Possibly just defective from the start? The last tech that looked at it said that it was too tight but it would not loosen up. Does it work like drum brake shoe tensioners in a car, ratcheting tighter as needed. If so, it is just not releasing. I will get it checked. My rocker box covers do need clearancing also, the ticking in the top end is very noticeable. Thanks for the info.

Have had my 07 long enough to get tired of all the noise. Runs hot also. Put in a can of B/G MOA in the crankcase and run an octane booster. Valve lash noise is gone, engine run cooler and stronger. Tired of the trans noise also. Headr that B/G makes a product for that. Will also try other things if I need to. Question: Does anyone have any knowledge if adding these things will void the warranty? :drink:

My post at hdforums:

Quote
Though I was possibly one of the luckier '07 Ultra owners that couldn't really complain about the "clatter", I did have to change my riding style to stay away from it.  If I operated in the lower rpm ranges, say below 2400 in the upper gears, I could induce the clatter which many claimed was "lugging".  So as one that loves riding the mountains vs. the open 4-lanes I found myself consistently changing gears to keep in that 2500-3000 rpm sweet spot.  Not really a problem riding this Ultra as a "sport bike" but more of an annoyance compared to all my previous years of settling into the proper gear and having a wider power band to operate in.  Of course we have to realize we're now dealing with different ratios via the new six-speed; and yes, I have the 5th gear whine but it is very tolerable using the Bel-Ray 85W-140 gear oil.

After reading all the IDS posts here and specifically noting the positive responces from iclick, UltraKla$$ic, and many others, I broke down and ordered an IDS from Discountbiker.com in Florida.  Total costs was ~$214.00 for everything, and it arrived here in WV 2 days after Discountbiker had it in their hands.  And what really shocked me was they installed the bearing at no extra charge without me even asking!  Have to say their service was EXCELLENT!!

Installed the IDS Friday night, and Saturday my wife and I had a great ride with some friends covering ~200 miles of 75 mph open 4-lane along with some 25-40 mph backcountry 2-lane while keeping a diligent eye on the deer dotting the roadsides.

I think iclick mentioned that H-D tech support made the statement that the new IDS was not a "fix" but more an "vehicle enhancement".  Well, whatever we want to call it, I totally agree that it's an "enhancement" that I am very glad I installed.

I have no idea why, but the first thing I noticed was running 60-65 mph in 5th. gear, the whine was all but eliminated.  I was really shocked as I didn't expect any effect on the 5th. gear noise as I have accepted it as a result of the straight cut gears.  So I'm still scratching my head on this one.  Had to really listen with the radio off to know it was there.  But my biggest praise for this IDS, was while running the backcountry roads and being able to settle in a particular gear and have no noise whatsoever whether I was at 1800 rpm or 2200 rpm.  I even took the opportunity to lug her down to 1500 rpm in 4th "and" 5th, and with smooth throttle she just pulled right up without any clatter, chatter, etc; and no I never ride at this low a rpm since I feel it would be in that "lugging" territory that's harmful to our twin-cams.

Sorry for the long rant, but I wanted to share this with all the '07 Touring riders; and especially those that are on the fence as to installing the IDS.  And if you are experiencing the "clatter", then I feel confident this will be your fix...........er, "enhancement"!

In addition, I've since then switched to Specto's new full synthetic GL=5 75W-140 Platinum Gear Oil and the 5th gear whine has been 99.9% eliminated!  Cruising at 60mph in 5th gear on level road, 2-up, and there is no noise whatsoever from the tranny!
