Help with Oil Leak in 07 110"
« on: June 25, 2007, 08:56:37 PM »

Noticed drip off of frame.  It is wet under the starter/ top of tranny.  Oil around base of rear cylinder and top bolt that holds engine case together.  Dealer installer dye in engine oil before my appointment.
It is apart now at the dealer.  Dye shows it is engine oil under the starter, but unknown source.  The rear head gasket had oil ready to leak out.
Any ideas for the source of the main oil leak which is showing up on top of tranny?  I do not think a porous case would show that much oil in 400 mile since I cleaned it.
The dealer is going to call HD to see if there are any other issues with theses motors regarding a leak.

Please help.

Sorry for the delay. It sounds like you have multiple leaks in multiple places. I would take it to your dealer for diagnosis. Oil leaks are hard to track down because of the wind while riding.

Good luck.

SERK has been at dealer since Monday.  There is oil at the rear or the rear cylinder head gasket.  Ok.  They removed both rocker covers and no signs of hitting, but they will add clearance.
The second oil problem is being linked to the rear cylinder, but I doubt it is the cause.  It is under the starter, but the dye proves it is engine oil.  The tech believes that it is coming from the head gasket, but I do not buy it.  There is no oil trail that I can see.  No oil anywhere else.  There is oil around the oil fill though which makes more sense.  I think it is blowing out the oil fill.  The o ring is ok.  I checked it with the tech an hour ago.

I will be putting a thousand miles on it This weekend so if its still anything other than the head gasket, it will be back.

As far as OCD, I am having chrome hardware added to the rocker boxes!.

I am only 75% confident that the head gasket is causing the leaks.

Thanks for your reply.

It could be the rear cyl. base gasket. I've heard some issues there too. Check that closely. Now's the time to do it, when the top end's apart. Hoist! 8)

You mentioned there is no indication of hitting on the rocker covers. That is correct. There is no problem with the rocker covers, it is the side of the rocker boxes that has the problem. NOT the rocker covers. The problem is the intake valve spring retainer hitting the SIDE of the rocker BOX, not the cover. Make sure the tech is looking in the right place.

I meant the rocker boxes.  You guys are good.  The tech showed me that there were no signs of hitting but I have never seen boxes that showed contact.

I wish I had had my camera when they pulled mine, but you could see on the far left edge, right where the intake spring is closest, a little 'smiley' where the round retainer was hitting an an angle. It was maybe 1/16" inch deep and about 1/2" wide at the edge. It isn't very noticeable until you knew exactly where to look. Since the springs are mounted to the head, and the rocker box can move around slightly before bolting it down, I can imagine you could get, or lose, clearance just by shifting the box around a bit.

Someday maybe someone will get a picture of the problem.

Thanks for the pics ! :2vrolijk_21:
These will help my dealer.
He know not this problem and he received any informations from the MoCo.

He'll look that in same time that he will change my head gaskets.

Thank you very much.

This is so funny, because my dealer checked mine in early March.  I was told that they checked because this was a "known" problem at the time.
