Primary Drain Plug O-ring
« on: June 28, 2007, 01:48:43 AM »

Anyone else having problems tearing 110 motor primary drain plug O-rings when tightening?   I've torn 2 with very little torque on the plug.  Any tips like teflon thread tape, etc.?  If the plug is only tightened enough to snug O-ring, will it hold without vibrating loose?  If no one else is having this problem, Maybe they've been giving me the the wrong size O-rings?

What's the part number for the rings you've been given.  For primaries prior to the new 07 part the o-ring on the primary plug was 11324.  The o-ring on the engine oil and tranny plugs was 11105.

I believe it should be the 11105 since the plug is the same as the engine and tranny plug now......I don't think there is anyway the pre-07 O-Rings would even come close to fitting....

Being one who wants to overtighten things, I always use a torque wrench on those things.  It doesn't really feel tight enough, but I've never had any of them leak.

bearammus,

It's not unusual to tear the o-ring on any of the drain plugs, since the machining of the plugs and the cases leaves sharp edges.  All the 0-rings on my bike were torn at the first oil change, indicating they were torn from the MoCo.  Check for sharp edges and always lubricate the o-rings before installing them.  It is real easy to overtorque the plugs; get the torque spec and use a torque wrench.

BTW - didn't have this issue with the 0-rings on my '99 Dyna.  Bought one set in six years, just kept reusing them - must have been tougher material back then???

Have not had problem with o-rings tearing upon install but I have noticed when draining that the o-rings were flattened and brittle.  With my previous Ultras this had not been the case and I have even re-usued the o-rings in a pinch.  Better to get new ones each time and I do as a practice but those on the 110 are way, way beyond servicable.  Possibly the heat?

Heat would be my guess, Jerry.  It has a way of killing neoprene and rubber.  The one's I pulled off at the 1K were in rough shape, but changing oil since then, mine could have been re-used.  I don't, but they didn't look bad at all.

Kinda of standard procedure with me to replace the o'rings at every fluids change.  I don't know if it is always necessary, but if I have them on hand at each change -- I never get tempted to re-use a questionable o'ring...kind of built in discipline...

Took the words out of my mouth Scott. You're supposed to change them at every fluid change. They were not designed to be reused, even though you might get away with it from time to time. Change them every time, you'll never have a problem with them. Hoist! 8)

I had the same problem (although minor) on all three of my drain plugs.  The cause is sharp edges after machining as mentioned above.  I put a 3/4" counter sink in a hand held mandrel and after draining, I removed that edge.  It was very easy and since it's cutting up from undernieth, there's no chance of cuttings going into the engine, etc.  You can also remove a chuck from a drill motor and use that by hand.

I was tearing the new O rings every time I installed.  Took a jewelers file and a little emory cloth to a sharp edge.  No further problem.  Thanks for the input.

I dont even use em anymore. I spread plumbers dope on the plug threads and never see any seapage. Been doing this for years.
