abnormal seat wear?
« on: June 30, 2007, 09:59:52 AM »

Has anyone noticed this:

Right where my left thigh rests on the seat, the leather bead has worn through the black & is now gray. (there is also a couple other spots too)

Do you think this is a w**r**ty issue?

I'm a little pissed that for $35K, the seat is wearing poorly with only 2347mi on the clock.

I would definitely bring it back to them. Expect a song and a dance, but make 'em change it for you. Good luck.

I religously apply Glare vinyl and leather protector to my saddle, backrest, passenger backrest, tour pak and dash pad.  The ONLY time I ever saw anything like this was during my KS trip earlier this month, since most of it was done in the rain, and I didn't bring the Glare with me.  Certain areas of the saddle, backrest, and passenger backrest got that gray look..........usually at normal contact wear points along seams.  I reGlared everything when I got home..............good as new.  I think this would be a hard sell to a prickhead dealer if you're looking to have it replaced under warranty, but certainly worth a try.  Other than that, they may say just as the owner's manual says, that it is a "characteristic" of the "fine" material from which it is made.  If it were me, I'd Glare it........keep it Glared, and ride it.  No worries!

My two cents - it's leather or a variation thereof which will take on a new look after wear, even less than 2500 miles.  As mentioned my REGGAB, frequent and liberal use of a leather treatment (harley goop works for me) will do your saddle wonders.  On the other hand, if the saddle is wearing prematurely and you want that "out of the box" look, it might be worth a trip to the dealer - let's us know how you make out.

This is unfortunately what I did. Not very happy that I had to buy a $1k seat on a $35k bike!

Ditto - Same problem only worse on the back-rest.  Spoke to dealer said they would contact Harley.  Service Dept kept giving me same excuse for few months until I told them that would no longer be acceptable (along with several other service problems).  Store manager grudgingly said they would replace backrest (said Harley would not stand behing it even though I only had 1500 miles on bike when problem started)..........that was 2 months ago & I am still waiting for part???

It is a DAMN shame that we are paying all this money for something that is supposed to be the cream of the cream and they still won't stand behind it when something is just not right.  Harley owners (even those that start out with a chrome head start) spend millions on after market industry much of which goes back into the MoCo and the dealerships themselves,  a little customer service goes a long waaaaaaayyyyy!!!  It always seems like we are taking money directly out of the sales/service persons wallet.  The way that they run a business is a wonder that they are in business...we put up with TOO much chit.
