Detachable Luggage Rack
« on: July 05, 2007, 05:22:25 AM »

I'm looking for a detachable luggage rack for my new SERK. I don't like the one that HD have on offer as it has a raised rail around the edge of it and my bags will sit on top of that rather than on the rack itself. Does anyone know of an alternative rack that will fit the HD detachable docking kit ?

The only flat rack that HD have is the one that attaches to the sissy bar and these then have to be removed together. I want to leave the sissy bar on and only remove the rack.

Any ideas ?

Nige, I also have the rack with the raised chrome gallery and will have the same issues. On previous racks I've always used some of that perforated matting to protect the chrome and to resist the t-bag from sliding. I plan to use something similar but of a thickness to make up the distance from the rack base to the top of the gallery. You don't see a great deal of the rack when carrying luggage so I see this as the best of both worlds - practical, but keeping the look of the rack when no bag attached. Ain't looked for suitable material yet though!

just a thought.....

Hey Nige, did you consider a permanent rack. I'm thinking of trying this one. http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448767838&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302287433&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302287433&bmUID=1183640721386&bmLocale=en_US It looks pretty nice and integrates into the fender supports for a clean look. I think it will fit our bikes, as we already have the Bullet TS and relocated licence plate. I wasn't sure I want one permanently mounted, but this one's kinda growing on me. Hoist! 8)

Unless they have changed, that rack will NOT fit the SE3- due to the wider rear fender.  I bought one, got it home and fought with it for a while, and then checked the width- 3/4" too narrow....

Thanks for that Freestate. And Welome Aboard! :2vrolijk_21: I was also concerned about the tombstone light interfering. Back to the drawing board. Hey Nige, Nevermind!!! ::) Hoist! 8)

I thought about doing the same thing, but I'm kind of reluctant to spend another load of hard earned on something that I am then going to have to mess around with to make it work properly, especially when that something is some kind of crappy packing material to make the bag sit right !! At the moment though it doesn't look like i have many options.

I guess freestate has already answered this one Howie. I looked at this rack too and, having had experience of smaller racks previously, decided that it wouldn't support the T Bag properly. (smaller racks tend to make the bag slump backwards).

Thanks for the input though.

Cheers.

I do not think it will fit because above the tombstone taillight, the normally flat chrome support (luggace rack tube support-HD) has a hump in it to make room for the tombstone taillight.  I believe this rack would require the mounting bar to be level as in the rest of the Road Kings.

If you're referring to the "Stealth" rack, the Taillight has nothing to do with the fitment issues.  It is 3/4" too narrow to fit the mounting point.  They need to manufacture one designed for the SE3's wider rear end.  I had to go with the twin-rail detachable rack, which is not the greatest option, but it worked on our just completed ride down the coast, from Va to Savannah, GA.

Indirectly the taillight does affect the fit, because the bar above the taillight has an upward hump in it to avoid hitting the taillight, leaving a non flat surface as the stock road kings have.

That may well be, but if the thing is too narrow to fit the SE3 mounting rail, then the taillight is the least of your problems.

There is NO difference between a stok RK and the SERK in the tail section.  The swingarm is wider.  The fender is wider.....but the frame is the same as a stok frame.  They were able to squeeze the fender into the same space without doing frame modifications.  So...all the racks will fit unless they are in competition with the tombstone tail light.

Sorry to disagree, but when I couldn't get it to fit, I took it to the dealer, and the Tech couldn't get it to fit either.  Unless this particular part was defective from the manufacturer, the rails won't match up.  If you want, go ahead and buy one, I really don't care.

You are right freestate. I ordered a detachable rack for my SERK too and it was definitely not wide enough to fit the mountings. I have since decided not to have the detachable rack because the mounting hardware touches on the saddlebags when you open them and will mark the leather. I am now going with the integral luggage rack/sissy bar option. When riding solo I will revert to the small sissy bar and stock seat.
