Updated Harley Oil Filter
« on: July 05, 2007, 10:51:04 AM »

Seems I remember a blurb a little while ago.  Did Harley change the specs on its oil filter for Twin Cams?  From what I remember, they changed the pressure relief rating to get more oil thru the filter......something like 40-50lbs vs the old one that bypassed at around 12-15lbs.
This makes much more sense to me, force all the oil thru a new filter, if it plugs, then let it pass.

So was I dreaming of such a filter?  Didn't see it in a search of the forum.....

I thought the change was if the filter micron size or change in filter material.

That is the change - the original filter for the Twin Cams had a 10 micron rating.  There was also some talk, which I could never independently confirm, about them changing the bypass pressure at the same time.  The original setting was so low that the filter was bypassing more often than not, especially on a cold engine.

I think it came up in the threads discussing those $200 filters and all the debate on micron ratings & whatever.  But none of my searches could drill down fine enough to find it.

GRC--So there really is a 'new & improved' version of the Harley oil filter?  I looked at them on the shelf at the dealership and the box looks like the same old filter.  I'll copy the part number and check it against what they have in stock.

Thank you very much!!   :2vrolijk_21:

About a year ago Motorcycle Consumer News did an oil filter test both filtering capabilities and pressure release on several brands of filters.  As said above, the HD filter pressure release is so low it probably flows open more than closed.  Anyway, they rated the K&N filter at the top or second (cant remember) and the HD at the bottom.  If I remember they did not like the HD filter element material as well.  Have used the K&N filter ever since.

Only use K&N fitlers on both bikes.  Think they are about a buck or so more than an HD one.

I ordered two new filters...they came in marked Superpremium 5 ...5 Micron...don't know if it's cellulose...or paper...probably cellulose I hope. Better filtering medium...now I can't get the FRAM piece of crap off the Ultra. Bought a new strap wrench will try that. The FRAM POS has minimal fluting on the end, and my Harley filter wrench can't get a bite. The Ultra filter has too much crap around it to get a regular filter strap wrench on there...I hope the strap wrench does the job. Boy she is tight...and yes I did lube it prior... :huepfenjump3:
