Check Engine Light Mystery
« on: July 13, 2007, 07:51:27 AM »

I noticed on my SERG a couple of months ago that the check engine light was cycling for a longer period of time than usual (5 seconds vs. 2-3).  During my recent 2100 mile trip, I noticed that the bike began illuminating the check engine light a second time (for approximately 9 seconds) and will do this whether or not I've started the bike after the first 5 second cycle is complete.  Does this mean that it has stored a failure code or ??

Is there a way to diagnose this myself or do I need to shell out some buckos to the dealer?  The bike runs great otherwise, it just takes about 20 seconds before it completes both cycles before I can start the bike.   By the way, my bike is stock with the MM EFI, etc.

I checked the Harley repair manual and it refers to an ELECTRICAL DIAGONOSTIC MANUAL (part # 99495-01) which I don't have.

thanks in advance,

My 02 RK did this a few times - exactly as you describe.  Apparently a stored failure code for a misfire - usually on the rear cylinder as I recall.  Very likely nothing is wrong - old code.  Dealer erased it 2 different times on my bike.  Do not know of a way to erase it yourself - others might.  Figure your dealer will recognize it easily - its been a common problem.

Thanks ISKI.   I was hoping it was something simple.  The bike is running great so I figured it couldn't be anything too drastic although I'm off to Sturgis in a few weeks and I don't want to tempt fate  ;).

Blue,

When the check engine light illuminates at key on, goes out and then illuminates again for approximately 8 seconds, and then goes out and stays out, that is telling you that there is a historical code stored in the ECM.  That code indicates a previous fault that is no longer active, and it will clear itself after a certain number of cycles.  If you are curious as to what the code is, a dealer can hook up their test equipment and read/clear the code for you.  I'm not aware of a method to read and clear the codes yourself, like there is on the later models with the serial data bus.  You should be able to clear it without reading it by removing battery power from the ECM for a few minutes.

Thanks Jerry, that sounds worth a try as a first step if it saves me a trip to the dealer  ;)

We ought to all hook up one afternoon. Somebody just pick a spot and we will spread the word. What do you think?

Oh yeah, did I mention that we are leaving town 3 weeks from today! Just 3 weeks, thats 21 days boys.  :beerchug:  It sure seems like it snuck on me this year! I'm starting to get real excited, and my trailer will be out of the paint shop by next weekend. I'm going by the painters tonight to check on progress, he said the dark blue and silver on the body will be done today, and the light blue on the body and lid next week, then clearcoat and we are ready for reassembly. :2vrolijk_21:

Oh, sorry about hijacking this thread, I'm done now :givemebeer:

Thread Hijacker!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Seems I remember there is a method to at least tell what that stored code is.  It involves a jumper wire across two pins in the ECM inferface plug, a cycling sequence of the ignition switch and some turn signal button pushes.  Then you have to count turn signal flashes and find the code displayed by the flashes in a list of codes.  Usually it is a failed start attempt......at least it was on my 02 Ultra.  You can either trudge through the 50 start cycles, or go to your stealer and have them clear the code.  I have that procedure on my other computer, but it is 900 miles and 2 days from here.  I'll hunt it down when I get home.

Try this.....

Quote
The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes).
Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

That works fine on the new ships, Chief.  The 01s and 02s have a completely different method.

My bad. Totally missed the -01 on the manual. In that case, I'm no help at all. Sorry.  :nixweiss:

The only time I had a check engine light on my eagle was for a code for the engine running backwards, like a run on situation. The dealer cleared it for free and sent me on my way....RANDY
