piston noise on 2007 cvo 110 cu in
« on: July 13, 2007, 12:10:20 PM »

I hope someone can help. My 2007 ultra classic screaming eagle is currently in the shop with a cold sounding piston noise. Once it gets hot the noise goes away. The dealer says all parts are to spec. Any thoughts?????????

Welcome to the site Gary.  Please introduce yourself in the new members area.  There have been problems with the 110's but I haven't heard of this one.

Boatman

Thank you for answering my thought. My back round is that I am ASE in machinist on engines.
After looking over the piston and cylinder there was nothing, but I did not see the pin or cylinder head. I think Harley might be covering something up. I have told them that the noise I will not take the bike back. They are saying you are covered for 2 years on the warranty. Most of this type of noise will last past the warranty before failure.

Gary,

Can you elaborate on what you mean by a piston noise? I can't get in my head what you're hearing.

Not to make light of the situation, but the 07s are hardly ever cold.
My dealer had one that had no retaining clip on the wrist pin.

My background is in causal failure analysis Master Certified ASE Technician and Machinist, with a minor in metallurgy. If like my 07 110 this noise goes away as soon as engine reaches temp. Hence typical forged piston characteristics. As much as i hate to say it, your likely more apse to have a failure due to the dealer teardown than you are from the noise concern. To protect yourself i would have an oil sample drawn just prior to the next oil change then do 2 more the same way and get an actual baseline and trend pattern to identify if any REAL wear particles are showing up. If a problem exists this will show it.  For me i like telling my buddies that the noise is good because i know the horses are rearing to go! You can contact your local amsoil dealer for the oil sample kits 25.00 each including anaysis. Maybe this will help? :orange:

No, No, never!

I thought you might want an update on my piston noise. So far NO bike it is now going on one month being down and the parts are not at the dealer.

The noise I was getting was a very hard knock from the front cylinder, but once it got up to temp the noise went away. The power and all gauges read normal.

I want to thank you people for some of the information.

Gary,

Can you elaborate on what you mean by a piston noise? I can't get in my head what you're hearing.

The noise is a loud knock from the front cylinder. the dealer and tect also said something is wrong, but when they inspected the engine they are telling me there is nothing wrong. My wife which knows nothing about engines even heard this noise and was wanting to know what it was.  the noise comes every time the piston moves in the front cylinder.

Got my first Harley in '73, it knocked when cold too. Dealer said there was a problem but wouldn't tear it down without a retainer fee. Needless to say, I tore it down and found NO wrist pin clips in either cylinder! I took the barrels to Harley for warranty and the rep said they wouldn't do anything because they didn't tear it down. I was only 19 at the time so I didn't fight it. A simple compression test will verify cylinder leakage though. Wrist pin will double score each side of the cylinder and leak a lot of air if there is no clip. Good luck and keep us informed!
Haven't heard of this with the H.D.'s but alot of newer veicles have an issue with piston slap due to the shorter skirts on the pistons (weight issue), only happens when cold but makes alot of noise.
