Military Pay/Benefit Reduction
« on: July 21, 2007, 01:47:45 AM »

Here we go again, get ready here is your warning :soapbox: :soapbox: :soapbox: :soapbox:...In an article in the Air Force Times they are bringing up the pay equivalent to the civilian sector.  They are talking about it on the Hill regarding the awesome retirement, health care, food and retail shopping, gasoline, fitness, and intangible benefits that military members get should be weighed into the equation of salary when comparing military jobs to their civilian counterparts.  The end result is to align the pay for military members/benefits with those civilians.  I do NOT mean to dismiss the contributions of the millions of civilians doing work throughout out great county...but...

4 pages after the article on decreasing pay/benefits for the military is an article on the demographics of the 4,000 killed in Iraq/Afghanistan.  I am not sure but how many of my civilian counterparts are losing their lives in those jobs.  How many of them are fighting for the freedom so that the congressmen can make 6+figure salaries, and people can make a living in relative peace.

When this conversation on decreasing salaries/benefits come up I just want to ask one question (it has two parts):

How much is my willingness to lie down my life worth and how much is YOUR freedom worth?

Over this side of the water the soldiers get nothing apart from subsidised housing which is substandard anyway, they pay tax and get no other benefits.  I remember during my tours of Northern Ireland we were paid 50p (95c) a day "danger money" it was laughable.
The soldiers who serve our country never get mentioned and are classed as second class citizens and it's a crying shame.
So I sympathise fully with your article.
