08 JIFFY STAND
« on: July 24, 2007, 03:31:33 PM »

If this has been posted, sorry about the duplication.

Was at the Dealers today, and the service guys were reading a book from the MoCo about new stuff on the 08's.  Here is what they say about the Jiffy Stand.

(1) You cannot start the bike if the Jiffy Stand is down and the bike is in gear.

(2)  If the Jiffy Stand is down when the bike is running and you try and drive off, the bike will stall (?).

Must be a lot of new electronics.  Again, I'm still sorta new at this - does anybody know the origin of "Jiffy Stand"?

Ride Safe.

Walt,

See attachment for details.  BTW - I believe REGGAB hit the name part of your question right on the nose.  The idea was you could deploy the side stand in a "jiffy", as opposed to the center stand.  The rest of the world just calls it a side stand (as does H-D occasionally, as can be seen in the attachment), but H-D likes to be different.

Electronically interlocked Jiffy Stand! ::) You gotta be kidding. The bikes should be made for people that know what the hell they're doing! That's the biggest bunch of BS I've ever heard! Man, am I glad I got the last year of real HD Motorcycles!!! This is ridiculous!!! Just what we need, more idiots on the road that don't have a clue. If you can't put up your kickstand, don't ride!!! What a bunch of crap!!! :soapbox: Actually, I ain't done! ;D Maybe they figure if you can't start your bike because you don't know how to work the kickstand, they'll save w....ty $$$. They should supply matching trailers with them so people never have to figure out the kickstands, and never ride them! Geez, just trailer it and park it in front of your nearest Broken Spoke Saloon. Instant Biker!!! ::) ::) ::) ;) Hoist! 8)

Well, I guess you must have converted your scooter to an 06, because THAT was the last year for REAL HD Motorcycles. :2vrolijk_21:  Oh, and if you want to get really picky about it, I suppose we could go back to the Evolution bikes.  Yep...........'em r good scooters, as was the shovel, but truth be told, there aint nothing like kickin' a 1964 pan.  Now that is a REAL HD motorcycle.  Anyway, I think the word "real" is relative.  I could argue 06 is the last real motorcycle because 07s leave you with no control over your primary chain tension, nor anyway to get in there with an inspection mirror and look at it.  It can't be tuned with anything but a DT or SERT as far as factory equipment goes.  Flash cartiridges are gone.  The damn thing is hotter than 2 rats bumping uglies in a wool sock behind a dryer vent in the middle of August in lower Alabama in an unairconditioned house.  It is a real clacker too.  My 06 doesn't do any of these things...................so what is a a real HD motorcycle anyway?  Anymore, it is hard to tell.  The good old school days are gone except for those of us who choose to hold to them.  Sorta hard to do that with the "new" technology HD has introduced within the last two model years.

Sik em Reg!  I think real motorcycles do not have oil bags or rear suspension...I am a little impartial though.

Howie, my man, where have you been the past 30 years?  Big Brother has been coming up with chit like this for a long time, ever since the number of lawyers in this country reached critical mass.  Remember the seat belt interlock, where you couldn't start your car unless you buckled the seatbelt first?  Now it just looks like the other countries are catching up to our silliness. Fortunately, this one looks like it would be real simple to bypass.  BTW - am I missing something, or wouldn't the stand just fold up as soon as it touched anything while moving forward anyway?  Guess I'll have to go out and try it, right after I put my attorney on notice.  You know, file the lawsuit if I crash because the MoCo didn't provide an interlock on my '05.

I do like your trailer idea for those without a hint of a clue.  That would be the ultimate safety device, since they would never actually ride the bike on the highway.   :2vrolijk_21:

They did this for all us absent minded old farts who might forget we left the bike in gear when we shut if off, then come back out and hit the starter to let her warm up while we put on our jacket/helmet/gloves.  Anybody here admit to hitting the starter button without pulling the clutch in first, or making sure the bike was in neutral?

The kickstand makes a nice pivot point in a left hand turn...

The truth is, this technology has been on HD's competition for YEARS...they are just doing what new riders/buyers expect to see on a bike.  I personally don't see it as something to get my panties in a wad over....if it ever fails, it's easy to jumper around it.

I'd rather them put a cool electrically actuated center stand on it like the beemers have.

That would be a nice feature, Mike, but I'm afraid that is too foward-thinking for HD.  ;)
