Careful With Them Thar Tools!!!
« on: January 28, 2005, 12:26:44 PM »

Was putting a different windshield on the glide last night, my wife came in and I turned to talk to her, the torx driver slipped off the screw and scratched the crap out of my fairing.
That was a $670.00 (list) mistake!  I did some bargaining at the local dealer, (they owe me one), and paid $570.00 for a new one.  I found one for $545 at Surdyke HD, but with shipping it would have been a wash, and this dealer is only 2 miles away.
Ah, what the hell it's only money!
Maybe I can make a flower planter or weathervane out of the old one, or put it on my riding lawnmower for those high speed blasts around the yard.  [smiley=wall.gif]

Mobe, I just can't believe it. I am so sorry to hear this. You finally get the bike back almost 100% repainted, and now you have to buy a new lower fairing because of a slip.

Been there, done that,   [smiley=wall.gif] well not exactly, but I did scratch my tour pack[smiley=bigcry.gif] when the bike was only a week old. My mistake was putting a metal clipboard in the saddle and not paying attention to what i was doing. The only good news is that the touch-up paint from HD worked really well.

That kind of thing is just eventually going to happen.  Whether we back in to a curb and scrub exhaust or scratch paint or sit down with a screwdriver still in the back pocket; you just can't always remember everything.

On my bike the only battle mark (so far) is a tiny round chip on the left side of the front fender way down low.  Happened the very first night the bike was home.  I thought I had the front wheel turned all the way to the left so the rear was all the way to the right.  But it wasn't quite as fully deflected as I thought.

So when I was changing the kickstand and the spring pulled it out of my hand (that was also full of a wrench and a ratchet) the stand slapped back far enough to just barely dink the fender.  It left a mark in the top color but didn't go through to bare metal.  And, luckly, the touch up paint matched it very well.  Now I can't even find the spot without bending down lower than my waistline appreciates and looking very closely with a very good light.

For what it's worth, my last Road King was a really nice looking bike.  A really nice looking bike that had a nasty gouge about 3 inches long all the way through the paint right on top of the back fender.  Whomever had been there before me had overtightened that torx bolt holding the battery clamp down.  I snapped a socket off taking it loose the first time and the (now) sharp broken socket drug right up across the fender.  Spraying a little clear over the top of it to seal things off and putting the seat back on completely fixed the problem [smiley=laugh.gif] .

Sorry about the fairing Mobe.  When it's out and noticable like that though it really sucks.

Mobe, just wondering about the "other" side of the coin.  Were you lucky enough that some painted parts still existed in inventory someplace?  Or is it another long wait on painted parts?

Also, you gonna get the old touched up at a paint shop someplace?  Maybe someone with an air brush can blend it in nicely?  Then you'd have a spare for the next "oops."

Yeah, I don't want to whine about it too much.  I just kind of wanted to hear some of the other war stories out there.
In the big picture it's no big deal.
I just went out back and threw rocks off the bluff as far as I could, then took a stick and seriously injured several small saplings. Then I got over it and thought what the hell, lots of worse things can happen, like laying down a bike or road rash.
 It's all fixable.
One of the dumbest things that I ever did was to drop a bike in my own garage because I forgot to put the side stand down. I just stepped off and walked away, oblivious to the whole deal until I heard the big crash behind me!  [smiley=dunce.gif]

How this one... Was wiping the bike down with one of those new "clothes" that you get at the car shops now (the new 3m fiber what ever ones) and was wiping around the floorboards, low enough to via static electricty pick up a piece of bark without knowing and now with this piece of bark in the cloth continued to wipe the top of the lower fairing.  Well, I felt something wasn't right after three wipes, but that was enough to scratch up the clear coat on the top of the lower fairing...

All well....

Okay i can finally vent my story. I took a ride to the dealer to pick up you a few things, I was so proud to take the SEEG. I pulled into the parking lot which I have been in a million times and turned into a spot right in front of the store, It has a slight incline to it  and I pulled my side stand down which kicked out all the way so i thought. I throw my leg over and the bike starts to go down to the left I held on with all my might to my baby threw my back out but i was lucky to have just scraped the bottom of my lower fairing and footrest. The worst part is all the people in the shop were smoking a cig outside and I do mean all. Only the owner ran to help me and instead of thanking him i said something stupid like "Dont worry it happens all the time with my one short leg and all" he just smiled . I felt like I had a third degree suntan on my cheeks form the embarassment. My buddy says hey look at the bright side at least you did'nt fall of while going 55mph.

OK, I'll throw in my embarrASSing moment. [smiley=blush.gif]
I was riding the 95th off post (Fort Myer, VA) with Mrs. We behind on her 800 Suzi.  [smiley=huepfenpinkie.gif] [smiley=multi.gif] This was not long after 911 and there were extra barriers up just before the gate for a wee bit of a slalom course. Anyway, about 100 yards before the gate, we slow up to look good in the presence of the MP's (who have nothing better to do than wait for a moment to harass ya)  [smiley=whip.gif] and then it starts - ting, ting, ting. What the? [smiley=confused.gif] Where is that coming from? [smiley=confused.gif] I'm going about 5 mph and trying to look under the left bag, ting, ting, ting.  [smiley=confused.gif] [smiley=confused.gif] [smiley=confused.gif] Here comes the slalom, ting, ting, CLANK! [smiley=shocked2.gif] Something fell off my bike!!! I jammed on the brake, front - of course and at less than turtle speed, on a slope to the right, obviously right next to the MP shack, Anne lurched to the right and started to tip like the Titanic slipping into the icy depths. [smiley=dizzy2.gif] I thought of the paint, my chiropractic adjustment that morning, the look on that 12 year old Barney Fife looking MP,  [smiley=thinking.gif] the front & rear & bag guards and down we went. I was able to simply step off the bike  [smiley=clown.gif] and my wifey came to  [smiley=help.gif] - not the roid filled mp's - just the two of us going to lift an 800 pound, past 90 degree laying chunk of steel,  [smiley=juggle.gif] if nothing else, blocking traffic in everyone else's mind. Well we had been taught ever so recently by a fellow HOG member/biker cop  [smiley=bobby.gif] how to pick up a bike. So I assumed the position and started to lift, my L5 said  [smiley=shocked2.gif] HELLO, and my wifey stood on the opposing rider floor board and up she went, and oh yeah,  [smiley=oops.gif] SIDE STAND!!!! SIDE STAND!!!!!!!!! We got it, no more errors. Thanks to all the chrome guards nearly no noticeable damage! Somehow a large round file got sucked up into my drive belt(?) and followed me for a few feet. That som-bitch still lives in my tool box. [smiley=drink.gif]

Sorry about that,  I had that happen to a front fender.  Thats when I had the wife sew up a cover for the fender, tank and fairing.  Its like moving blanket material.

Mobe, let me tell you few little stories.  At Daytona bike week in 2002 we had just pulled into the Iron Horse.  The place was packed with bikes and people.  As we started to pull in Patricia told me to be careful.  I said, "don't worry about it" I was in a line of about thirty plus bikes riding through the Iron Horse trying to find some place to park.  We had seven bikes in our group.  The sun was shinning it was a beautiful day.  I was looking at all the sites when I started to make a slight turn going at barely rolling speed when I felt my front wheel start to give away.  I hit a soft spot of loose dirt when I was turning and I could not accelerate due to all the bikes and people.  So down we went, our electra glide classic tried to stay upright.  Patricia tried to stay balanced, but I could not do anything cuz of the loose dirt, down we went!!  Not only did all our friends see us go down, but a fully packed house of people.  Several people came to our aid.  The bike had zero damage.  When Patricia looked at me with that I told you so look, I felt my ego drop to the floor and run to try to find some place to hide.  Good thing is that no one was hurt and the bike wasn't hurt.  Sorry about your misfortune with Them Thar Tools!!!

[smiley=oops.gif]

Last summer I was selling my bike so I could get my SEEG2.  I thought that I would take a picture in the back yard of my bike.  I put the kick stand down got off my bike and went to get my camera.  I had only taken four or five steps when I hear a loud thud.  I turned around to see my bike lying on it's side with the kick stand sticking into the ground.  The weight of the bike and having watered the yard earlier had made the ground to soft, the kick stand slipped into the ground and the bike fell over.  Putting a small crack into the lower portion of the fairing and breaking off the tail light.  Several hundreds of dollars later and a lot of work and the bike was like new.  That is another reason to have a centerstand.  I felt like a real dummy.
