Has happened to you yet.
« on: July 25, 2007, 06:36:23 PM »

I have a 2006 Autum Haze. I bought it for around 33,000 I was going to trade it in for a 08 CVO until they wanted to give me 24,500 for my mint condition garage kept baby. This was the dealership I bought 2 bikes from, plus thousands of dollers on clothes and accessaries I am also a hog member there. Has any one else come across this. And the bike has only 12000 miles on it. Basicly there reasoning was the 08 have so much more so that leaves us SCREWED.

Are you enjoying your "ownership experience" yet?  ;D Bendover & smile.
My advice... keep the 06 Haze you have. It's far better looking than the bland 08's (IMO) 8)

This has nothing to do with you personally or how much you spent at the dealership. It's business the Harley used market is so soft right now its unbelievable. They need to be able to resale your trade in for a profit. Either wait it out or bite the bullet...

charlie,

I know none of us want to hear this, but the depreciation on the CVO's isn't any better than any other bike.  The Kelly Blue Book average trade-in value for a 2006 CUSE is $23,490 (avg retail $28,885).  If I remember correctly, MSRP was $32,995.  Assuming your dealer could sell the bike for $28,500, and assuming he would charge you MSRP for the '08, he was getting ready to make about $11,000 profit on this tidy little transaction.  Not a bad days work.

We all have to face reality and forget the stuff we told ourselves and the better half when we decided to spend over $30k for a Harley.  "But honey, it's already got all the extras I would have put on a regular bike anyway, and it will really hold it's value."  Turns out that both of those comments were untrue.  And thanks to the jacked up volumes from Harley, these bikes are not rare and bikes in general are in an oversupply situation, which depresses the resale market for all bikes.

IMHO, if you are really set on getting an '08, you need to consider selling the '06 yourself rather than trade it in.

One thing that you have not figured into the equation of this "soft market" is the fact that now is a VERY good time to buy a used H-D. I just got a smoking deal on a 03 SE Deuce....and if I see another bike out there that I like, and I think is way under valued, I just may pull the trigger on a third bike.

What ever happened to buying them because you like it and want it.....any fool knows the deprecation hit you take on a brand now HD is hard....and yes sometimes its worse than others.

Buy what you like and hang onto it!!!

I just bought a house on the Jersey Side of the Lincoln Tunnel. I am about a mile from the toll booths, and two miles from mid-town, and I have a two car garage, and a five car driveway. At first I was thinking about Hoboken, but prices are through the roof and street parking is like gold....off street is like platinum. I am one town over in Weehawken. I am so happy here I have to pinch myself every morning when I go downstairs and check out my rides! Here are my current two.

The only equity in owning these thing is to ride the rubber off a bunch of times, or buy a non-cvo and do the same.
The guy who bought my Anny FLHR got a deal cause I sure didn't on the trade...

I found this problem when I got my 2006 Haze and traded in my 1997 Fatboy with custom paint set by HD and lots of chrome. Since it was an 80" EVO carberated motor it held it's value the first year or two the Twin cam motor came out due to problems with the Twin cam and people didn't trust it or fuel injection. Once the bugs in the twin cam got worked out and people loved it and the fuel injection the 1997 Fatboy plummeted in value.
I am sure the 103" bikes will be the same after awhile if they get the overheating and paint issues solved. Folks who don't know one bike from another will say why buy a used bike several years old with no warranty and unknown history, when for just a little more I can get a new bike with 110" motor, ABS brakes, 6 gallon tank etc.
Especially in those markets where the older bike owner paid the $1,000 to $6,000 above MSRP he will want to try and recover the inflated cost. If the newer bikes are sold near MSRP due to the soft market then the older bikes will have to be sold cheaper to make them move quicker.
As an owner of an older bike, if you want to get top dollar for it then I guess you would have to advertise nationally and be patient. If someone in one of the areas that are still selling new bikes well above MSRP sees your bike then it may seem like a bargain to them.
