Weehawkin you are in my neck of the woods.  My parents live just south in Jersey City.  We lived in Union City for a few years, and I was in charge of the Emergency Room at Palisade General Hospital for a few years before coming back into the military.  I will be visiting soon maybe we can get a group ride together...no promises but I will be riding as often as I can but with so many friends and family that I haven't seen in 3 years they are not going to let me out of their sight much.

The typical HD dealer is no different than a car dealer when it comes to computing a trade-in price.  I had an 06 Roadglide with 10k miles that I wanted to trade in for an 07.  The bike lists around 17-18.  I was offered $11500.  I called several other dealers and they all came in within $500 of one another.  I put an adv in Cycletrader and sold it for 17k.
The keys to the quick sale were:
1.  The bike was still under warranty so the new owner only had to be concerned with cosmetics
2.  The bike was black and it seems no one hates a black Harley
3.  No sales tax in Az for private party transactions giving you a financial  advantage over the dealers.
Your dealer wasn't being greedy or at least no more so than any other dealer.  With inventories being up they need a financial incentive to incur the flooring expense.  Bottom line, sell it yourself.   If you are in a state that exempts sales tax in a private party transaction, promote the hell out of that in your adv.
Good luck

One thing that you have not figured into the equation of this "soft market" is the fact that now is a VERY good time to buy a used H-D. I just got a smoking deal on a 03 SE Deuce....and if I see another bike out there that I like, and I think is way under valued, I just may pull the trigger on a third bike.

What ever happened to buying them because you like it and want it.....any fool knows the deprecation hit you take on a brand now HD is hard....and yes sometimes its worse than others.

Buy what you like and hang onto it!!!

My brother works at an RV place and just took in a 2006 Deuce for $10k.  YIKES.  Now that's some depreciation.  Bike has 1400 miles.  I can mostlikely get it for under $11k but not sure I want to mess with it for the couple of bucks I MIGHT make reselling it.

As for my '06 SEUC, I added the NAV, bluetooth, Traxxion, Progressive 440's, Tru-trak, HID, true duals, SE Pros, SERT, AC, chrome starter, BAH fork caps, custom seat, all kinds of bits and pieces, so I am sure that I would need the gallon can of anal eaze if I was to trade/sell it.

I most likely will at some point but the new bikes haven't gotten enough better in looks or equipment to motivate me to take the hit.  Someday they will, but for now I can be perfectly happy with where I have this bike and just dream of the day when I get my next new one.

Hey, we could be like my customer with the Range Rover that paid $80k in 2003 and it's worth $30k now.

Roger,
You hit it right on the head.  All of the additions that we make to our bikes, that are important to us, and yes, cost us a fair bit of money too, means absolutely nothing when you trade a bike in.  Having traxxion, air seat, GPS, and all of that stuff means nothing to the dealer when it comes to what they are going to give you for trade-in value.  (I speak from experience on this with my 02 Ultra that I traded in on my '07 SEUC).  When I told the dealer what all I had on the bike to get more money out of him for trade-in, he said that doesn't raise the value of the trade-in.  So when it came time to trade the bike in, I removed my air seat, GPS, pipes and stuff that he said didn't raise the value.  When I traded the bike in they asked me what happened to all of the stuff that was on the bike when they appraised it.  I told them I took it off after you said it wasn't of any additional value for the trade-in.  They were going to give me less for the trade in and I said I don't think so.  You told me those additional parts had no additional value, so I took them off and put it back to what you were appraising, a basically stock, plus all the chrome I didn't take off, Ultra.  They weren't happy, but I said I would have been more than happy to leave those items if you had given me fair consideration for having them on the bike.  I ended up selling the parts out right and made a few bucks on the side and got the trade in price for the bike. So I didn't feel too bad.  Just my $0.02 here.
Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

That's what happens when you want to have the convenience of a trade in.  If you bought a $32K car 2 years ago you wouldn't get more than $24K either.  Sell it privately.

I guess I don't feel so bad now.  I just traded my '06 USE with 8K mi. for a new anniversary '08.  I am paying $13K to boot.  I got one dealer down to $11,500 but they sold the bike out from under me and said I would get one sometime between Sept. and Dec.  I didn't want to wait, so I went to another dealer and did the $13K deal.  I have already signed over my title, and am waiting for the bike to come in.  btw, the dealer told me "if your bike was any color but green, people don't buy green bikes.  They sit on the floor".  The dealer is the same one I bought my watermelon USE from for $3K over list!
You'll all get a kick out of this.  I had forgotten to bring the stock mufflers, the CVO dust cover, and the remote garage door opener in when I traded my bike.   (I dealt with one of the owners of the dealership- not a salesman).  He told me to forget that stuff, they really didn't want it!!!  -Retail & Steve

I justed visited a hometown dealer. They had a Red 2005 SE Ultra w/ 2500k for sale, used. They're asking 35k.......... :o

I'm guessing you meant a red 2005 SEEG, no SE Ultra that year.  And there's no limit to what they can ask.  Of course, with the current soft market they may be asking for a long, long time.   (Retail book value = $25k)  Maybe they just like the look it brings to the showroom and don't want anyone to buy it. :nixweiss:

Leave it to Ernie to cut to the heart of the matter.  Being able to trade in a vehicle is a major convenience for most of us.  In my case, I haven't sold a vehicle myself in the past 30 years.  I don't want people I don't know calling me at home or coming by my home.  I also don't want the hassle of dealing with the "looky lou's", or the clowns who want to take it for a test ride/drive, handling the financials without getting scammed, etc.  So yes, I'm willing to take a small loss for the convenience.  As for those stealers who want to hit a grand slam by lowballing the trade and padding the MSRP on the new bike, however, they can eat my shorts.  I don't need their product that bad.

Charlie, Motorcycle sales, are in a slump, lots of buyers paid a premium to get their CVO's if they bought them as an investment, they are in a little better position then those that bought Enron but they are going to take a substantial hit

If anyone bought anything with wheels for an investment then no one could aford a mobile home - they appreciate in value about the same as a CVO.

I have a 2006 Autum Haze. I bought it for around 33,000 I was going to trade it in for a 08 CVO until they wanted to give me 24,500 for my mint condition garage kept baby. This was the dealership I bought 2 bikes from, plus thousands of dollers on clothes and accessaries I am also a hog member there. Has any one else come across this. And the bike has only 12000 miles on it. Basicly there reasoning was the 08 have so much more so that leaves us SCREWED.
Sounds like a typical stealer trying to make some big $$ low balling for your trade  :( If you must have the bland 08 cvo try selling your 06 on HD trader. Goodluck.

charlie,

We all have to face reality and forget the stuff we told ourselves and the better half when we decided to spend over $30k for a Harley.  "But honey, it's already got all the extras I would have put on a regular bike anyway, and it will really hold it's value."  Turns out that both of those comments were untrue.  And thanks to the jacked up volumes from Harley, these bikes are not rare and bikes in general are in an oversupply situation, which depresses the resale market for all bikes.
