I gotta agree with Chip here. "They are a recreational expression of the inner person you have kept repressed most of you life and are looking to release. That's it - nothing else - accept it." That's the biggest bunch of BS I've ever heard. Not the investment part, because I agree with that. But not for the reason you give. Maybe to you it's just another toy. But to some people, it's actually their lifestyle, with the bike an integral part of it! Don't go minimizing what role bikes play in someone's life. I think their are many "bikers" that would agree that it's not their recreational toy. It actually sounds does like the words of a HD dealer!

Wow, this thread has some deep chit.  Existen....  Existentia.....  Exitstinkshal.....   yeah, deep chit.

Chip's right, Howie's right, everyone's right except anyone who thinks their Harley dealer is any more than any other car dealer when it comes time to trade.  Oh yeah, and the guy who said the bike is just a toy.  That's not deep chit, it's just a full of chit.  The bike is just a toy.  Just like my penis.  And I'm not sure which is more important to me.

I have the greatest of respect for your posts Hoist but take a minute to understand mine. First of all, Recreational is defined in Wikipedia as "Recreation or fun is the use of time in a manner designed for therapeutic refreshment of one's body or mind. While leisure is more likely a form of entertainment or rest, recreation is active for the participant but in a refreshing and diverting manner. As people in the world's wealthier regions lead increasingly sedentary life styles, the need for recreation has increased. The rise of so called active vacations exemplifies this trend." Don't tell me you don't feel your H-D refreshes your mind and diverts most of the BS of life while you ride. I believe that's why we do it! As far as repressed expressions, not sure of your age but my generation was taught to value career, responsibility, accomplishments and reputation while leading cookie cutter traditional lifestyles without risk or unnecessary attention. My Harley's (I've had five but I've ridden since I was 14 too) allow me to escape those norms and be who I want to be with people I enjoy and respect. And for "toys", yeah I personally believe anything that gives me this much pleasure must be a toy. It sure ain't my boring 4 wheeled commute mobile! IMHO

Just like the music of the70s, there was a time when we could buy a new Harley and ride for (almost) free after that.
Now that the MoCo is producing about 400,000 bikes a year they are only special to their current owners.
It took me awhile to realize that I only want to ride a Harley.  Oh sure, I look at all the other bikes in the magazines, but when it comes time to lay my money down, I'm a gonna ride a Harley.  In the final analysis, the look and feel of a big V twin is what touches my soul.  The days are gone for trading for next to nothing, so I'm hoping I can be happy for a long while with what I have.  I've got long time Harley friends who've gotten too old or disabled to ride.  I realize that nothing lasts forever, so ride free my brothers!  -Enjoy the freedom of the road, and the best motorcycles God gave us- as long as you can.  - :2vrolijk_21:  -Retail& Steve

We probaly come from different cultures Bob. Yes, it can be a release. But it's so many other things as well. I'm 52 and have the same responsibilities as most. But my life otherwise revolves around motorcycles. And it has for many, many years! Most all of my personal friends are bikers. My spare time is related to bike oriented things if I'm not riding one. Others besides outlaw club members can live a biker lifestyle. So although it provides many of the theraputic values you refer to, it can also offer so much more if that's your gig. Didn't want to argue or berate your post. But there are many levels that these things take on in our lives, and felt strongly about pointing that out! ;)

Reading this thread absolutely amazes me. Some of you evidently are expecting your local dealer (who most of you aren't really too loyal to) to give you what you paid for your SE, one , two or even three years ago. Are you crazy? Does anybody out there own a business or actually participate in the real world? Your H-D dealer who has invested several million in his business and has untold costs of operation has to make money to just keep the doors open. Yes, you can wash out on your trade better if you sell it yourself. So why don't you? Because most of us are lazy and not willing to take the risk. So we turn it over to our dealer of choice who has overhead expense you wouldn't believe and expect him to do it for us. Just letting your trade-in set in his inventory costs him several hundred every month. It's a crap shoot for him too. And then he has to pay commissions to employees, insurance premiums, taxes, etc. and hope guys like us don't return their purchase bitching about issues we expect him to remedy for free. And for those of you who bought your SE as an "investment", you guys really need to talk with a professional money manager or councilor. No motorcycle is an investment. They are a recreational expression of the inner person you have kept repressed most of you life and are looking to release. That's it - nothing else - accept it.
Well, Bob, you obviously don't really know all of us that well.....I, for one, (and I'm quite sure there are others here) have never repressed my inner person that has always required motorcycles as long as I can remember for whatever reason.  ;) har!  spyder

I've never repressed my inner being.  It's been out riding motorcycles for 37 years now.  To me having a motorcycle in my life is more important than having a car.  Not only can I get enjoyment, relief, a sense of being from riding my scoot, but I can also ride it to work.  So it's definitely not a toy.  I take pride in my scoot.  I never took as good of care of my toys as I do my scoots.  So they're definitely not toys.

Ouch!! with all the problems on the 110, I'd keep what I had or seek another dealership and auction them off.
Is it worth selling it privately.
My dealer is quite open with what he makes, which is about £4k but that is for a quick sale to keep his business ticking over.   Overall I spent £20K on my Heritage Springer £13650 new and the rest on engine upgrades and replacing like for chrome like parts but that is just personalisation.   I Finally sold it back to him for £11500 and the selling point was the stage 3 conversion from 88ci to 95ci otherwise I would have only got £9K.  It did pain me to do that but then again I did swop it for my beloved SERK.
He's got a family to feed and support just like I have,  I mean I didn't have to swop it did I?

I guess I hit a nerve with what I said about being screwed from HD on what I thought was a chity trade in deal on a bike that I was told holds it's value becouse of the limited editions that they build a year, And yes I do own a very successful business And can aford to buy any bike I want. That is not the POINT, The POINT is I got screwed becouse I fell for the BS from the sales man like so many others,That's what piss'es me off about Harly Davidson. The dealer ship I bought my bike from I have spent 52,000.00 in the last 2 years and that doe's not include what I spent on motor clothes for my wife and I.My final point is if they want loyal customers then they need to be loyal to there customers just like I am to my customers.
