Leather tour pak
« on: July 26, 2007, 01:02:06 AM »

I see that with the 08 Screaming Eagle Ultras Harley has finally come to their senses and returned to the King tour pack. I have an 06 with the leather pack and find it very substandard. I am not able to hold nearly as much and to my knowledge there is not a lid organizer that fits. This is very disturbing as the king pack I bought for my road king had a lid organizer installed, for my "stuff" and I had a pouch for all my doo dads

Has anyone changed out their leather pack for a king pack and did you have any trouble matching the paint scheme I have the autummwood scheme. I know it will be expensive but I am seriously considering it as I love the bike 40k miles and I plan on puttin on another 100k before its over haha and don't want to purchase an 08 just to get a new tourpak, and I am not crazy about the SE color schemes for 08. I am concerned that the painter will have a problem matching the Screaming eagle paints. Does anyone have any experience with this

Thanks

Hi chanman,
Yes the switch has been done by several members. I don't think any one of them were the Autumn Haze color though. Check the section on the FLHTCUSE or try a search for Tour Pak and see if the thread comes up.
Many paint supply and body shops have paint analyzers that can match the colors you want or they can work off of the paint samples in the touch-up kit by Harley part# 94400 (for the Haze/Black) it also has a clearcoat with flakes in it to put over the Autumn Haze paint. No Red is in the kit though to match the stripes.
Also if you change the Tour Pak you will need a standard passenger backrest and rear speaker pods since the leather Tour Pak stuff will Not fit the standard King Tour Pak.
Some members have also changed out the fixed mount for the Tour Pak and used the detachable style mount. If you use that system and want to run without any Tour Pak then you will have to move the under rack amp to another location such as a saddlebag or under the fairing.
Attached is a photo from another member who changed out to a King Pak on a 2007 bike.

Great info Eagle. I have the leather TP and initially wouldn't have even considered swapping out. But that pic w/ the matching TP looks awesome.  :2vrolijk_21:

I've searched high and low and can't find this thread and pic. Any chance you can provide the link? I'm curious about the pipes and the TP conversion . Don't recognize the pipes but I like the looks. Thanks

I FIND THE LEATHER TOUR PACK JUST FINE FOR ME. I WAS A LITTLE RELUCTENT WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT BUT AFTER  TIME WENT ON THEY SEEM TO SET THE CVO ULTRA APART FROM THE REG ULTRAS. NOW THE 08 ARE JUST ANOTHER DOLLED UP REG BIKE WITH A SUBPAR PAINT SCHEME AND COLORS. I HAVE PLENTY OF SPACE IN MINES. MOST OF THE TIME IT IS OFF BIKE ANYHOW. SOUNDS LIKE YOU MAY NEED TO TOW A TRALER FOR ALL THE EXTRA RM YOUR NEEDING?JMO

haha no need for a trailer but the leather pak is smaller and we stay out for 2 to 3 weeks at a time and often cover 7 to 9k on these trips every piece of storage is precious. I think there are plenty of other item that sets the SE Ultra apart from the regular ultra and IMHO the tour pak is substandard when it comes to traveing.
I really like the blue bike well done

Here is the link for the blue Tour Pak.

I had to use the advanced search feature here and put in topic for painted Tour Pak then limit search to Pictures and the Ultra section to find it. There are many threads with painted Tour Pak photos.  ;D

Wayne,
Concur with your statement.  At first I didn't care for the "turtle-back" tour pak, but now that I have it on my SEUC, I really like it.  Yes, it carries less (I used to be able to put both my wife's full-face and my 3/4 face in the old tour pak, but now can only put her full-face), but it definitely sets the CVO Ultras aside from the "standard" ultras.  If you look at a crowd of baggers (or any motorcycles, for that matter) lined up, you are able to pick out the CVO Ultras by the leather tour pak.  The new ones with the standard painted tour pak, look just like any other chromed out ultra now, but with a different (I won't even call the 08 colors fancy) paint job.  I know there are two sides to this discussion and I take nothing away from those that have or want to change out their leather tour paks for painted ones.  I say whatever spins your prop. ::)  The more that change them out, the more that makes mine more unique.  (always look at the glass as half full instead of half empty.)  I'm glad I have it on my bike.
Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

Well, my "vote" is for the painted T-P.  Every time I see one of the leather T-P's, my mind flashes back to the early days of football.

Ouch! you should forward that to Willie G. he might get a kick out of it! I have to say my 06 i like the leather tourpak, but not the growth underneath with the amp, although I think should have been detachable from the start.
I do have to admit after learning more about the CVO line that the 05 have the potential for the best combination of OFF/ON flexibility re: tourpak or not. IMHO john

The leather tour pak is what first attracted me to the bike. After many miles and over a year I still like it.....

Hey, I like the old leather football helmets.  That's back when men were men, women were scarce, and sheep ran scared. :o :huepfenlol2:

I think it is also a safety issue. Have you ever been behind a 06 or 07 on a dark night? Can't see the damn things, which is when they look their best. ;D I think it is great MoCo wised up and dropped them for the 08's.
