Low fuel light and check engine light?
« on: July 29, 2007, 10:18:18 PM »

Road a good distance today , total of 373 miles . I stopped for gas after low fuel light came on but I was on fumes , I was at 188 miles and the check engine light also came on ? I filled up and it went off , road another 175 miles needed gas again and had to ride on fumes for a little while and the check engine light came on again? The only difference is it went on and off for 10 miles and then I was home.Is this normal? :'(

Nope. Except I can say that you are getting great mileage. Which may mean you are getting a bit hot. When you stop, the engine heat builds, and the trigger is I think around 325 degrees, so when it hits that, the engine light goes on.  So, does it go out as soon as you start rolling again?

The fist time it went right away and I didn't think about  it , but the second time it went off and on for ten miles. I checked the oil temp , and it was normal at about 230 .  :-\

hdnut,

You say you were on fumes when the low fuel light came on.  Did the engine miss at all, and how much did it take to fill the tank?  One possibility for your engine light coming on is low fuel pressure due to low fuel level, if you were really that close to empty.  Low fuel pressure will set a code on it's own, and it will cause a lean condition and possible misfire which could also set a code.  Anyway, to answer your question, no it is not normal for the check engine light to come on.  You can check the diagnostic trouble codes stored in the ECM to determine what caused the light to illuminate.

These tanks hold more than 5.0 gallons (mine has taken as much as 5.3 when filled to the bottom of the filler neck with the bike on the jiffy stand, others have reported similar numbers in the 5.2 to 5.4 range as well), so you should have still had plenty of fuel at the pump pickup.  The best way to proceed is to check for DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Code), since there should be one or more related to this incident stored in your ECM.  Assuming you're still running the Harley ECM, this link will tell you how to check for codes:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=6462.0

I don't know why, but the link I posted works fine in the preview pane but doesn't in the actual post.  Just highlight it, right click and "copy", then paste it into the address bar in your browser.

hdnut,

No code is considered to be a good thing, but in this case it isn't earth shaking.  P0113 is for the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor and indicates an open circuit or out-of-range high reading.  This could very easily just be a loose connection at the sensor.

Oil temp is different than the head temps that activiate the sensor. Normally they are set for around 325, but peaks over that generally occur on hot days, and thrigger it. Goes off when cyl temp dropps.  The diagnostic can see if it was just temp, not unusual, as above.

This is good info.  I put in 4.9 in DC last week in the wee hours, freakin out that I screwed up waiting to find a fill too late.  Makes me wonder if I should ride it out all the way and see what she holds, with a small 1 gal container tucked away.  I was runnin fast on I-95, 85 or so, netted about 32mpg.

The dealer said the engine code was from the oil being about half a quart low? :nixweiss: Any one else had this before?

Whoever you're talking to at the dealership is jerking your chain - running the oil 1/2 quart low does not and will not set a diagnostic trouble code.  Try another dealer.

I think that running 32mpg at a constant 85 is pretty phenomenal.  I can get 40+ if I never get over 70, but WTF, I did that once a long time ago. :znothingfunny:
