hdnut,

IF they do everything that is listed for the 10k service, that is not a totally unreasonable price.  I've seen prices posted in dealerships that ran anywhere from $300 to $600 for the various service intervals.  The 20k tends to be the most expensive, since that's the one where you disassemble the forks, clean and inspect for wear, and refill with new fluid.  Figure approximately $90-100 for parts (fluids, gaskets, grease, etc.) and anywhere from 4 to 6 hours labor.  However, if they do like many dealerships and just let the tech shortcut everything but the fluid changes, it's a ripoff.  Unless you can stand there and watch the entire process, you basically pay the price and take your chances.  My suggestion is to invest $60 in a shop manual and then spend a day getting intimate with your bike.  None of the various fluid changes or lubrications/inspections is terribly difficult, and no special service tools are required.  A professional will be much faster, but it's nice to know for sure that everything was done, and it's also satisfying to know you did it yourself.  Just a thought.

I saw where someone said that you can do fall away with out removing the fairing???  I would have to diagree based on I have tried to do it that way several times to see if i could save the customer the money and you will find if you recheck the fallaway both ways you are off if you do not do it as the book states.

But shops tend to do certain things here and there. What I mean is that many do not really follow the same guidlines as another dealer.  HD rasied many of it's service milage a few years ago. I think that many things are ok to go to a higher milage but others are not.

Anyone that has ever had to air hammer out a dyna swing arm axle knows this.  Many shops do not do the entire check list either, so something get gleamed over and checked off as ok. I have had customers that bring the bike in for something we notice something else and when asked about it they tell me well I just had it serviced. Clutch out of adjustment , loose throttle cables,  belf tight/ loose, worn brake pads.

For us it is great we make a customer for life, as i am not worried about getting to the next bike. We take the time to do the job , and make sure we have missed nothing.   Simple things that can get over looked can end up very bad. You would think that they would look to at least sell something to the customer...  :nixweiss: But I guess not, when a customer comes in with rear brake pads that are almost steel on steel and they just had a tire put on it makes you wonder what they are really doing.

Price wise we 209 for the 10K service to do what the book is stating for a 10K service as or 07. I do let my customers know what else could be done to ensure they get the most milage from there bike.

I added a Goldwing to my fleet last week. Picked it up today from having the 1k service done.  $129, TT&L out the door.   ;D

I 've done most of the service on my HD, but when I called around for prices, I would mention that we have hydraulic clutches, mine has an auto primary tensioner, so I asked if it would be less due to that.  NADA.  I did have my selling dealer do the 10K, minus the fluids, and the they didn't even grease the neck bearings. That means they probably skipped other stuff also. Bottom line is, I feel much better doing all that I'm capable of so I know it's done.

The thing about Harley service intervals that really gets me, above and beyond the ridiculous prices, is the fact that many of these services are necessary at all.  For instance, if the proper engineering work was done, and the correct fasteners and tooling specified for assembly, why should I need to check critical fastener torque every 5000 miles?  If the proper type of fastener is used and installed properly, it's not going to unscrew itself.  Harley has made some progress recently, with things like sealed wheel bearings so you don't need to remove and repack those every 10k, or the automatic primary tensioner adjuster, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.  I believe if you compare the list for a Harley to the one for the Goldwing, the reason for the much lower service charge could be traced to the number of items on the respective lists.  And then you can look at a typical auto service and really shake your head.  My wifes compact SUV has 5k intervals, and the list consists of 1. Chg oil and filter, 2. Inspect exhaust system for damage, 3. Rotate tires.  It stays the same until you get to three years, whereupon you're supposed to change the coolant.  Pretty strange that bolts don't mysteriously unscrew themselves, requiring me to crawl around under the car with a torque wrench every 5k miles, or that cables don't need lube and adjusting, etc.  :confused5:

AJ,
Does you're service dept. have any heartburn with you supplying as opposed to them throwin' in the chitty SE fluids ?

No. They are really good about it. I asked if they would supply me with Amsoil and they said no. So I told them I would supply my own. Then I called HD Dude. Which reminds me, Jim you'll be getting a call in about a week.

Jerry

so true Jerry.  it reminds me of a recent adventure when i was riding down the road and my air filter cover, air filter and back plate bolts just dissapeard! WTF!!  Go to the dealership and get a "oh, that chit happens sometimes" Really, i must have misread the booklet where it saids "welcome to your $35k bike and oh by the way, $500 of parts just may vibrate off you bike"  Guess i should have checked the cover to see that the bolts were long enough through the back plate!!! Anything else i should check!!!

1. Should be performed by an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, unless     you have the proper tools, service data, and are mechanically qualified.

2. Disassemble, lubricate, and inspect every 50,000 miles (80,000     kilometers).

3. Perform annually.

4. Not all vehicles are equipped with an enrichener, fuel valve, or spoke     wheels. Consult appropriate topic in service manual.

5. Change D.O.T. 4 and flush brake system every two (2) years.

This is what is recommended - What you get is a lot of checks that may or may not be preformed, If you have DOT4 Brake Fulided then it should be changed out every TWO years and Not mileage based.

The Fork Fluid is another feel good bunch of  junk if you plan on keeping it then rebuild it at 50K and save yourself a lot of $$ unless you feel there ia problem with your handleing.

Just change the Fulids in the three holes every 5K and ride it. You will know if something is loose or comming loose if you ride it. So do like it calls for and check it.
