08 SEUC Handle Bar Change
« on: August 03, 2007, 12:25:31 AM »

I know a few of you already have an 08 SEUC.  I don't know about those of you that do, but I am ready to swap my handle bars out.  I had pull backs on my 02 Ultra and really miss them.

I was in the local HD dealer today and ask the service dept. about changing the handle bars.  They showed me a bulletin sent out by HD basically telling them not to attempt it yet.  The service tech said it will require handle bars specifically designed for the 08 SEUC since these bike have the "drive by wire" throttle.

The service tech also said the bulletin mentioned that HD is saying that the ECM may have to be changed if the handle bars are changed (sure hope not!).  So, getting just any old set of bars off the rack is not going to work.  HD should eventually offer replacement bars for the 08 SEUC and I am sure the after-market guys will produce replacement bars also, but probably not for another six months or so.

If any of you know more on this issue, please let me know what you have heard.

Brain dead here apparently as I'd never even considered this sidebar to the new throttle controls.  Without thinking about just assumed the new system somehow fit inside the bars (any bars) and the measuring/calibration would be against the moving throttle/grip.

This could make changing bars go from being a little expensive to DOWNRIGHT EXPENSIVE.

The other factor is the front brake hose. I want to do WO575 that most of us have used on the SEEG and the CUSE but you have to have a longer front brake hose.  How does the ABS affect changing the hoses?  How hard is it to bleed?

According to posted HD docs, the ABS requires the Digital Technician to bleed the brakes.

Sure looks like things that were took for granted that were easy to change are now pretty complicated affairs.  I know I like my pullback bars.  Hope the MOCO or aftermaket offers a solution pretty quick for you 08 er's..

I guess all of us 08 SEUC owners are in a "wait & see" holding pattern.  I too thought about the W0575 bars.  If the "fly by wire" and ABS works out well, there will probably be a few good options.  My concern is that if the wire throttle and ABS don't become popular in the near future, with the limited production of the SEUC bike - will HD or anyone else think that production of bars and other required components are warrented (profitable)? :nixweiss:

No disrespect for the fellows with the 06's and later, but I don't think they have made a good bike since.  It took a lot to get my 05 to where it is today, but I really like it.

Just guessing here, since I haven't seen one torn down, but when I first saw the drawing of the sensor I assumed there would have to be some sort of modification to the end of the handlebar.  We already know the grips change to match up internally with the gear on the end of the sensor and to eliminate the connections for the cables.  I can see two things that would need to change on the bars:
1. A notch for the sensor to lock into, to prevent the entire sensor from rotating within the bar.
2. Shortening the throttle end of the bar to allow for the "gear" mechanism on the end of the sensor (to keep both grips the same distance from the centerline of the bars).

IF they made the sensor to fit within a standard diameter handlebar, it may just be possible to modify existing bars to make the system work by grinding the appropriate notch for antirotation and sawing off the appropriate amount to equalize left and right. Of course, we won't know for sure until some brave soul takes his new bike apart to scope out how all this really fits together.  Any volunteers???

Jerry,

Wow!  You must have more time than I do.  You have put a lot of thought and time into this.

I think I will hold off on the trial and error approach for now and wait until someone's R & D department does all the work.
