Avoiding "Jiffy Stand" Drops
« on: February 02, 2005, 08:35:58 AM »

After reading several of the Jiffy Stand wrecks in the recent "Careful With Them Thar Tools" posting, I thought I'd share a product that I have found very helpful in the shop, trailer and on the bike lift.  I purchased two of the Pit/Stop-Trailer/Stop chocks from Condor Products http://www.condor-lift.com/ last year along with the quick release mounts for trailer and lift.  This stand works.  I've done my best to try and shake the bike off this stand and can't get it done.  As you might guess, no more balancing act in the trailer when trying to get the tie-downs on.  I particularly like the feature that keeps all the hardware completely away  from the wheel.

By the way......I have no connection with this Company...just reporting a great product that saves lot's of grief and $$$$$'s.

BLM, Mr. WeCVO and I got two of these Condor chocks last spring. They were intended to go in a trailer ----- that never happended, but they do work very well in the garage, just as you stated.  They make it so you can stand the bike up and work on it, and not have to put it up on the lift.  They are very sturdy. We moved a few months ago and so it is not a problem with this garage, but our last garage could barely hold two bikes and my car --- it was very tight, so we had a set of these set up and one of us would ride our bikes right into it at the end of the day, and it made sure that everything was as it should be for distances.  It is really a helpful tool.   Great tip.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I've got a product called Bike Pro in the trailer that is a similar kind of thing.  It actually looks a little less robust than that shown in your picture but it's been great to work with.

Twolanerider, BLM777 said it "I've done my best to try and shake the bike off this stand and can't get it done." We have not tried our best, I am sure, but yes, we have leaned the bike over in it's cup and had it in straight and no matter what we did, the bike does not feel at all unsecure.  And I am talking about just sitting on the garage floor, not mounted in the trailer.  We know a Smithonian photographer who would love to use these chocks to photgraph models on bikes. No matter how they chose to mount the steed, the chocks can hold the bike indeed. And like BLM777, we are in no way in business with Condor, just love their product and gladly endorse it.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Condor is the best.  I  bought 4 of them so far. Had one in Chariot trailer. (sold it) have 2 in haul mark trailer and just added 4 to New Chariot trailer.

Ther are two types. One shown in picture, another style for angled nose trailer, (like the chariot)

I tried ALL the others... No comparsion.  Owner suing other copy cats.  Definitely woth the money.

The Bike Pro thing I mentioned: When I said it was a little less robust I hadn't meant to imply it was something trying to knock off the unit pictured.  It's in fact a different style unit entirely that just does the same job.   I've also been quite pleased with it and it does a wonderful job of holding the bike upright even during jostling of the bike.

The unit pictured here does look more robust and may do an even better job.  I'd not hesitate to consider it at all.  The Bike Pro was a piece I saw demonstrated at a rally I was attending several years ago.  It just did a nice easy job of completely cradling the front wheel without even getting close to touching the wheel itself.  Not meaning to discount the Condor device at all.  Just pointing out an alternative piece that I'd been pleased with the experience of.  Here's a picture from the mftr's website:

BLM, hope you don't mind, but I re-sized your first photo below.  I was having a helluva time scrolling back and forth, lol!  This looks like the cat's meow for the trailer I bought awhile back.  Are there any special requirements of the trailer to be able to accept one of these?  I would probably get the Simple Chock SC2000/trailer only chock.

Thanks for posting this! [smiley=beerchug.gif]

So do you bolt it to the floor or can you move it around when the bike is not on it?

mr_magoo, you can move the chock around until the bike is in it, then it won't move. We never bolted ours at all.  The whole unit weighs a little over 20 lbs, and can be folded down so it easy to store out of the way. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Is the question about the floor of the garage or the floor of a trailer?

It's free standing on the floor.  When I purchased the units, I also got thrown in the mounting hardware designed to be used in trailers.  It consists of a backing plate and a predrilled, threaded hole in the center to attach the Condor to the floor of the trailer with one thumbscrew.  (Takes about 30 secs to install/remove.)  This removes any possibility of the bike and the stand shifting in the trailer.  Since I have a lift, I got a third mounting kit that I installed on the lift to use the stand to steady the bike and avoid working around tie downs etc.  Besides the stability (one evening a friend and I, gross weight over 450, tried to shake the bike off the stand and couldn't get it done) I particularly enjoy it because nothing comes within 2 or 3 inches of the wheel.  As many of you can, I'm sure, attest, many of the chocks on the market are a real killer on chrome or custom cut wheels if the bike is moved the slightest amount.  Hope this helps.
